So I'm thinking long term now (for once haha) IS it possible to drive the CA18DET with no boost or VERY VERY low boost (like 4-5 psi tops)?

I ask because I live in a city where it is winter 6 months of the year snow + winter tires + boost + lots of power = not moving.

So no boost (even if it means a HUGE loss of power, I'm not gonna race in winter) is what I want to try to do in winter, but what would need to be done to insure the engine doesn't blow up or something, because some engines don't like not having boost...

you can't really lower the boost... the wastegate is set to a 7 pound spring. you can raise it by bleeding off air and not opening the 7lb spring, but you can't lower it. just don't floor it and you don't get boost. I drive 90% of the time either in vaccum or at 0... boost eats gas:(

believe me, you won't have boost until 3k anyways, so just shift before then and you'll be fine. hell you can rev it as high as you want, as long as you aren't giving it lots of gas, you won't build boost!

doh...but what happens when I'm not keeping the stock turbo and say going for um...the disco potato?

Since with my plans I also want a quick spooling turbo (which gets good boost by 3500 rpm) :/ Well hmm..I don't want a laggy turbo that's forsure...

Would an external waste gate beable to allow lower boost levels? (going a little off topic, but still kinda on topic)What would be a recommended turbo for something like this, and say a car that'll make 330whp, but still be excellent for quick spool and autox (since autox needs good boost responce)

You willl want a ball-bearing GT series.

I've driven weeks at a time without stepping out of vacuum, it's all in your foot ;) Nothing will go wrong.

heh...I got a heavy foot...guess I'll have to work on that before I throw a CA18 in...that's if I can find a 240 to put it in first (I think I might of found one :D)

a GT25R, (the big trim) spools around 4400 on a SR. So I would imagine a bit longer on a CA. The smaller trim spools around 3900 on a SR.

An S15 T28 will spool quickly and its good for 300 whp.

As far as external wastegates go, try to get one with the lowest spring possible for your desired boost.

You've got my vote on the foot action. I can stay out of boost for as long as I want and still drive just fine. Just pay attention to your gauges, and don't come out of vaccum.

I'd take a long look at the Disco Potato if you really want that power.

GT25R is better.

you could disconnect the wastegate actuator, then somehow prop the gate itself in the permantly open position......then just reconnect it back up in the summer.
