So today i called in at work, and im changing the waterpump. I had a spare one, but Im wondering do higher horse power guys run a waterpump gasket?

I have one paraut (japanese company), and a felpro one. Which should I use???

thanks guys,

I use copious amounts of RTV silicon.

cover the paper gasket in Indian Head Gasket Shelac and you'll never have an issue with it again.

I think im just gonna use copper spray on the paraut gasket. It matches the waterpump better then the felpro and Im used to using copperspray.

Anyways this problem turned out to be a blessing in desguise. My intake cam pulley(tomei) advanced itself 12 crank degrees. Im lucky nothing hit.

thanks guys.

what did your car behave like with the intake cam advanced that much?

When the seals on my waterpump went I discovered that it had been installed without any gasket OR RTV material and it didn't leak. That may have contributed to the pump failing as it misaligned it with the other pulleys slightly, and may have put extra stress on it.

I've got a NAPA pump/gasket on there now and things are going swimmingly thusfar.

the idle was rough and taking off from a standstill wasnt that smooth. I thought it was my tune. but it pulled really well in the midrange atleast. u kno the butt dyno isn't that acurate.

anyways I set my exhaust cam 2deg retard and my intake 2deg advance. results the power feels more smoother perhaps alittle more topend, but it definately feels weaker overall.

so if its weaker overall why run it that way, are you just playing with the adjustable gears to get a feel for things?

Try advancing your intake cam 2 degrees, leave exhaust zeroed out.

Remember that turbo motor's don't like a lot of overlap either.

As A matter of fact I am playing with the gears. If I already knew what gave me the best combination then i would just leave it there.

anyways I originally started with 2deg adv intake, and zero exhaust. and to correct myself having the exhaust 2deg retard actually feels good uptop. The power feels like it last longer.

Actually Im gonna set the intake adv 4deg, and retard the exhaust 2deg. I think that would give me the widest powerband. And leave it till I get to the dyno or get my tomei cams.

cool let us know what works out best for you.

I have some tomei cam gears as well, but have only tried advancing the intake no more than 3-4 degrees. I started worrying once things got hot valves and pistons would be getting sexual with each other.

but obviously not on stock lift/duration cams seeing as your intake advanced what was it 12 degrees??

would duration be something to look at in terms of interference with the pistons, or only lift?

So what kind of water pump did you have? I have had very bad luck with any and all aftermarket brands. I only use OEM Nissan Atsugi water pumps, as that are the only kind that has never crapped out even under an incredible amount of stress.

It was the paraut waterpump, but the pump itself was fine. Just the stupid gasket.

Ill probably buy an oem one now to keep as backup.ALso the cams settings now 4deg adv intake, and 2deg ret exhaust feels really good all the way up in the rpms. The next few days ill be tuning fuel again since i changed ecus. then back to the dyno for timing and a sheet.

ok so I just destroyed the NEW paraut waterpump. DONT BUY THOSE. Its dancing around like elvis when i turn the car on and it only took a couple third gear pulls on the highway. up to 6500rpms

hope no clutch fans are bolted to the FWD CA water pumps. Spells disaster
