Hi everyone,

I just noticed that when I am traveling at speeds of above 45 mph, and when I only take my foot off of the gas (foot not on the brake though) when the car is slowing down, I can feel a rumbling/rattling noise come from the rear of the car.

Since the car is rear wheel drive, what could be the problem and how major could it be?

Please help as I don't want it to get worse.

Thank,

Geoff.

O.k. everyone. I have been reading a little more and apparently it could be my driveshaft or U-joints. Now, I don't know much about niether, but from what I was reading online, I may just have to get my driveshaft rebalanced.

But any ideas on what could cause the rumbling/vibrations from beneath the car towards the rear?

I am just speculating about the driveshaft or U-joints based on what I have read.

Please reply with any ideas.

Thanks,

Geoff.

do you feel the whole car shaking when you slow down?, an unbalanced drive shaft would constantly be vibrating above a certain speed regardless of slowing or accelerating, check your drive shaft U joint, it is near the center of the drive shaft, it is the part that holds the shaft from it's center to the body of the car, i believe it is either 2x17mm bolts, or 2x19mm bolts, the u joint has to be tight and the drive shaft should not be loose in there, i hope this helps, check your exhaust system, some parts are known to go loose over time (bumps and so on)

i cant think of anything else that would cause this issue, any other ideas?

Thanks for the info. The car only vibrates when it is decelerating while the speed is above 35-40 mph.

It is a little cold up hear in the north east USA (Philadelphia, PA) and I have never checked U joints before, so I won't know what I am looking for. I will have the problem looked at tomorrow morning.

Hopefully whatever the problem is, it won't cost much money.

Thanks,

Geoff.

Thanks everyone for your help. I was too silly to think that it could not be the lug nuts when in fact it was the lug nuts.

All of them were loose on my driver side rear wheel.

Thanks,

Geoff.
