I bought a non running 93 240 a while back and finally got around to tearing into it this weekend. I also have an 89' 240 with the SOHC engine with 250,000 miles that has developed developed a bit of a knock- my plan was to try and get the 16 Valve engine from the 93' going and swap it into my 89'. I didn't pay but $200 for the entire car- so if nothing else I got all the accesories and parts needed to swap a 16 valve engine into my 89'.

To make a long story short- after tearing it down, it appears the 16 valve engine was run without oil- until it quit. Two of the mains, and several of the rod bearings burned up- bad- the crank is junk. On the head, everything looks fine, til you take the cams out and see what lack of oil did to the bearing surfaces- they are rough- looks like it almost seized the cams also. Lots of metal in the oil pan- bits of bearings and what-not.

I am starting to think by the time I got this crap running, I could probably buy a stock SR and do that instead. I'm not building a race car, just a quick everyday driver.

My question is this- if I try to repair the 16 valve engine- how far should I go? What all else do I need to check for before spending money on this thing? It goes without saying that I would do a new crank, rods, pistons, timing kit, and head. Would the block likely be OK? I know no-one can really say without seeing it and measuring it- but if someone with some experience with these things could tell me "yeah, it's usually OK", or "heck no, they are usually junk after being treated like that" it would be great.

I'm up in the air on this thing. I am comfortable doing the work that needs to be done, but most of my experience has been with American Iron-not a Nissan- I don't know the intricacies of this engine like I do a Chevrolet.

Please, someone who has built a few of these give me a little advice-Thanks-

HEY! I hear you I'm more familiar with ford thanI am nissan but after having a couple of nissans and few "datsuns" I cant without a doubt tell you thet you are the not so proud owner of a very effective papper weight or boat anchor. When I had a shop and a customer would come in with an oil starved engine all i could do was tell them the same sad truth as what I've told you . get another engine and try again. the good news is you can still find a good one, so keep your chin up ok.sorry.

Ok- cool- so are you saying you would you be afraid of using the block itself after being oil starved? Any other opinions?

Has anyone here brought one back from the dead? If either the head or the crank was any good I would proceed with a rebuild- but with both of them gone- I think I'll start beating the bushes again. A good KA is getting kinda hard to find in my area. I called all the local junkyards- and they had nothing- I then called about five really big yards that are not so local- and was able to locate only two of them- one for $750- and one for $800. They are guarrantied to be in decent shape and crank and run- but damn I hate taking chances like that- it ain't no fun swapping one you aren't sure is gonna run well. And even with a guaranty, if there is a problem it just sucks. Thanks-
