I just bought a brand new Murano and after I drive it there is a burnt rubber smell coming from the engine. And no I am not burning my tires. Has anyone else had this problem?

We're experiencing exactly the same thing... wonder if it's that antifreeze thing people been discussing here: zer...rygif

Me too. I just assumed it was the new engine protectant, no?

BTW when does this stuff wear off. I have 1000 miles on my 2010 Mo...

We purchased our new 2009 Murano last month and noticed the smell too, but we have 3,000 miles on it now and it's gone, FWIW.

My 2007 Versa had this smell from the day I bought it (0 miles) to the day I traded it in (60,000 miles) and on the 2006 Murano I bought with 67,000 miles, which still has the odor and it's pushing 90,000 miles. This is not a coolant smell, and I'm still not sure exactly what it is...

FWIW my new Murano did the same thing. For the first 500miles it stank like burning rubber (coming straight through the air vents in the cabin) but stopping and getting out of the car at the petrol station confirmed the smell was actually coming from the engine bay - the vents were just sucking the smell into the cabin (i guess).

I also noticed the heat-exchanger for the CVT (little radiator inside the bumper by the front left hand wheel) gets seriously hot( ) -

Parking the car in the garage after a run through rain and puddles causes loads of steam to rise of the exchanger from inside wheel arch, where rain water has hit it. AT first I thought coolant was escaping....

I read somewhere that CVT's naturally run at 60 ~70 degrees centrigrade (the CVT deliberately heats itself up when you first run the car in the morning) , so this explains the hot exchanger.

I'm guessing that coupled with the normal engine radiator and a/c condenser causes the whole front part of the car to get cooking hot. Some rubber grommets / plastic bits nearby must get a bit torched...

The smell does seem to wearing off now. Running A/C when stopped in stop'n'go traffic causes faint whiffs to come back now and again.

On our 09, the smells started dissipating about 1k miles and with 4.5k on the clock no odors. This is fairly normal for new vehicles, irrespective of make. We had the same thing with our Lexus RX's, IS and GS.

Yes its normal. I had this smell till I drove it for 1500km's. It's like the protectant sealant in the engines and stuff.

Omega is right, this is completely normal and typical of all new vehicles, to varying degrees. It's due to all of the new materials and surfaces offgassing, such as the exhaust system and other engine components burning off residual oil (oil is used to lubricate the dies when bending metal) and undercoating overspray. The brakes can also give off a smell during their break-in period.

If the smell should go away within a few weeks or a few hundred miles. Relax and enjoy that new Murano!

I contacted the dealer about this smell he also said this is normal and should go away by 1500-2000 miles.

New 10 - the smell has been strong - getting better at 200 miles but I don't agree this is normal for all - maybe for two days but 1000 miles - no way. I have had a few new cars - maybe 10 and this is the worst.

Offsetting this noxious issue is one fine car almost all respects - hope this goes soon.

I have the same problem. We also were on a long trip (it was sleeting) and the burning rubber smell and white smoke was coming from under the 2 front tire area, mostly on the passenger side. 2K miles. I hope it goes away with no serious problems!!! I LOVE this car! Anyone else?

I thought it was normal when I bought my 09 back in July of 08, but after smelling it again last week (the smell seems to come and go), I thought we should have it checked....of course the dealer said it was the salt solution that they put on the roads. When I explained that it stinks in the summer as well he said they'd take a look

anyway, it's now at the shop with the engine out having the head gaskets replaced. I know my way around cars and it sure didn't smell like antifreeze to me, more like hot rubber. The car hadn't used any antifreeze according to the overflow bottle, never leaked, got hot etc so I had no reason to suspect head gaskets, or for that matter, a coolant leak. I guess we'll see when we get the car back if the rubber smell is gone...I'm supposed to get it back today, but I won't be surprised if I don't. It was supposed to be done last Thursday

Talked to service yesterday, my murano is 2 days old. He said the engine is coated in Cosmoline to prevent rust and corrosion while it sits waiting to be sold. Should burn off........didn't say how long.

That is the "new car engine smell" as I call it! LOL......it smells really strong if you drive the car really hard. It will go away shortly.

Just bought a 2010 LE AWD and phew, OIL smell in the cabin. I had this same issue with an F-150 and ford fixed it with out hesitation. We took our Murano in for it's first service and they "couldn't Find a Leak". We were told it was the Chromium coating coming of the Tail Pipe, RIGHT. We now have 1300 miles on it and smell is noticeable each trip into town (15 miles). No smoke, just slow burning oil stink off of the exhaust manifold . the cabin has a filter you now. head gasket issues i'll put money on it. In another post some stated foam on the oil filler cap. Gasket leaking coolant into oil and vise versa.

Ok guys im gonna get you on this one. I drive about 70 miles a day, my 2006 Murano now has 125,000 miles on it. I still get a strong burning rubber smell. this is after a 70 mile highway commute. So its not the cat or the coating on the engine

Have owned an 04 Murano for several years - 90,000 miles, great condition, service up to date....
I smell burning rubber any time I drive it more than 15-20 miles.

God knows what happened to this poor car the first few years of its life. That's always the risk when buying used cars.

(04 SE here that I've had since new. Zero burnt rubber smell ever)

Oddly enough I just had a total brake job done and no longer smell the burnt rubber smell.
I didn't mean to imply that it had been there the whole time I owned it... I was in a rush I guess and my post wasn't entirely accurate.
Sorry.
This issue seems to be resolved.
