Did an oil change this past weekend and noticed that there was a piece of rubber hanging near the middle of the car. Upon further investigation, it was the rubber boot from my shifter linkage.

Is this something I should have the dealer fix, what is the danger of leaving it?

How expensive could a rubber for a G be?

If it were me, I'd have it looked at.

I'm sure the service people have seen it before. At least give em a call to check.

It's a $15 part....but I don't know how difficult it would be to replace.

Any techs wanna chime in?

Its not hard to replace. I know what you are speaking of...all you need to do is get under the car. Should be very straight forward.

I dont remember completely, but there is a chance you might have to loosen the shift assembly from inside the car as well...but I don't think so.

Hey Joe,

That square boot protects the 90* bend and selector lever input to the transmission.

It is possible to reinstall this without removing the driveshaft. If I were you I would safely jack up the car enough to access the cover. Slide the front section on first and stretch it around the back. After a replacement these fall off sometimes, getting them aligned perfectly is tricky.

In order to replace that boot you will need to drive out the dowel pin holding the selector input in place. For this the drive shaft and midpipe might have to come out and the rear trans mount may have to be dropped.

I have never tried to do this with the transmission in the car. Only while part or all of the driveline is out already. It is not too hard.

I'm waiting for a call back when they get the part in...do you think they'll have to remove the transmission? If so, I think I'm going to put the OEM flywheel back on. I cant stand the noise...

On a totally different issue; can I have the dealer check for oil in the spark plug galleys from the valve cover gasket? Since my warranty is up in August, I'd like to get this done if it's leaking.

I also asked the service manager to see if I can do an extended test drive of an FX35 while the G is in the shop...we'll see.

Did the fix today...only took the dealer about 45min. While I was there I had them fill the tires with nitrogen

Also test drove a new FX35. Handled great, no complaints! They even had an FX50...but no test driving that

It's a pretty easy repair technically. I'm glad to hear it went without issue.

The new FX is a great machine and if that is what Infiniti is planning on making the rest of their line like I cannot wait to see the new M and QX. The new FX has a great layout from the drivers point of view and the FX50S is an amazing machine. The new technology is pretty amazing, zero speed cruise and the distance braking assist.
