I just got a ticket for impoper exhaust, and I have the rs-r exmag freshly installed on my car. I thought this exhaust was legal, it was susposedly one of the quietest on the market, its not loud at alll really, a little louder than stock(I mean its 80mm piping) but Im pretty sure its legal. Cant I get it decibal tested to see? I think every state has a certain decibal level that the exhaust can be, anyone know what Im talking about, or where I would go to get it done? Im in Virginia if that helps

you will have to see what the law says, then have it tested, then fight the ticket bringing the results with you, for future references, have that testing paper in the car at all times

any modification to your exhaust system is illegal...i know that is the rules in cali and nevada...if you still have a cat and a resonator i think u can fight it...but if ur straight all the way back...then nope...but again...any modification past OEM dealership standards is illegal and a ticketable offense

Franz is right about the exhaust modifications being illegal. Any modifications to the exhaust is illegal. Just depends if you get a hardass about it.

Noise levels in CA are at 95 db. So you'll need Jasma to pass the noise test, but according to a brochure I picked up from the CHP, they don't have to noise test you with a meter, if the officer feels that it's too loud, then he can still ticket you and it will stand in court since he's the professional and blah blah blah. Also just FYI, the new jasma II certification is for 92db and lower.

Where would I go to get it decibal tested, nissan dealership or somewhere that does VA inspections? Or is there like a certain place where I have to go to for it?

you can go to a police station and ask them to do it actually. Just that it doesn't matter when you get on the road since the cop doesn't have to measure you nor care for the measuring equipment since he's the professional of the law and you're not. The judge will take his word for it. You should be able to go to a police station or a chp station and have a look at their brochures. I actually picked mine up during the Cherry Blossom Festival during the car show section and CHP had a table setup within the group of cars and grabbed some of their relevant brochures. Tells ya what's legal about the lighting, exhausts, ride height, blah blah blah.

Yes law in CA states that exhaust may not be modified, but cannot be louder than 95 db either. What you do is locate a BAR station to have your exhaust tested for free as I believe this service is free. Get the papers to prove to the judge that the exhaust is not as loud as your state law requirement for loudness of exhaust. And yes always carry the papers with you after you get it tested.

It is clearly illegal to modify the exhaust, BUT a conflicting law against that is that exhaust systems should not be more than 95 db in CA so therefore you can modify your exhaust system. Police are just there to enforce the law and since they don't carry any db testers with them although I think they should invest in some, they can still cite you for modified exhaust just because it's a possibility that your exhaust may be louder than 95 db or not. That's why you have to go to court for it. Innocent until proven guilty.
