I was in a stop and go traffic yesterday, and when the lane cleared up I gave the car a lot of gas to move up fast before the lane was taken. As soon as I gave it gas, the rpm shot upto 6000 and the car began to move up but I had to brake and slow down to a stop immediately because some retard cut me off. What I noticed was that the car stopped quick, but the rpm was still at 6000 slowing down very slowly... then the rpms finally went down to idle again.

Does the automatic transmission have to ability to use neutral gear or downshift in cases like this to prevent the car from flying out? What happened here? I have never seen this slow rpm drop before and I am worried. My car never showed any signs of slipping or any other transmission issues, but I just don't understand what this was all about..

Could it be the engine brake feature trying to kick in?
