Nissan may have wanted some good passing and high speed acceleration... so they made the highway cruising rpm just under the power band so that it's accessible with a simple downshift.
They may have also wanted you to have better city gas mileage so they made 5th gear close enough to be used at 40 mph.
I hate wasting gas. So if I end up cruising on the highway at 3k rpm, I'll just coast in neutral and maybe even turn off the engine.
