RPM higher in Tiptronic than D

Hello!

I have noticed that during the tiptronic mode, RPM at 60 is around ~2500 while in D is around ~2350. What is the reason for this? Both in top gear or 5th gear.

Also the shift from 2nd to 3rd is a bit rough in tip mode. I have test drove 3 m35s and all had the same slight roughness in 2nd to 3rd. Is there a software update that may be present?

I believe there is a software update for the shift. As for the higher RPM, it's likely due to ECU mapping/tuning...they assume since you're in M that you want to be in a more aggressive 'tune'.

Also, welcome to the forum.

I'm guessing the higher RPM is due to the torque converter not being engaged. In manual mode, I've read that it does not engage when you are driving under 63 mph, however, in auto mode, I believe it engages at a speed lower than 60 (I'd even guess lower than 55). A good way to test this theory would be to try cruising at 65 in both auto and manual to see if the RPMs match up at a speed higher than 63, but I've never thought to try that while driving.

Thanks for the welcome. New to infiniti as I'm usuallyinn audi. But recently due to maintainance repairs that were constant, I sold my 2.7t audi a6.

I have noticed the locking of the TC is not active at 60.as I let off the throttle in tip, rpms will sink to 1500.

I have an 09 M35. I've noticed the same thing when I'm actually using tiptronic or when I'm in sport mode (DS instead of D). The engine holds the revs for a time after you let off the pedal and if you give it the beans again, you will notice that same gear remained engaged so the car leaps immediately, unlike in regular D mode when every time you hit and let off the gas you have that delay until the gear is grabbed again. I probably said that wrong, but you get the idea.
I also noticed that when leaving it in DS mode for long drives the mpg drops a bit.

I don't know a lot about torque converters, so I'm not going to touch the comment "I have noticed the locking of the TC is not active at 60.as I let off the throttle in tip, rpms will sink to 1500". Except to say that I don't think I've ever noticed the RPMs stay steady when letting off the gas in any car at any speed, and that is something I would expect to notice and not like.

That having been said, I know from past experience that manual mode has higher RPMs at cruising speeds below 60 than auto mode. Since I made my previous post this morning, I remembered on the drive to work that I could test this. I confirmed today on the way to work that manual mode and auto mode have the same RPMs at cruising speeds a bit higher. My limited understanding of torque converters is that they lock something in the transmission to prevent slippage otherwise normal in automatics once they are up to speed. If that is a correct assessment, then it seems plausible that the torque converter not being engaged could play a role in the difference in RPMs between auto and manual modes.
