Rough ride...until I step on brakes?

I will be driving and it seems as though it is handling very weird. Bump, if you will. It also makes and noise, that sounds like a piston knocking, but I know it isn't the piston because it stops when I step on the brake. Which leads me to think it has something to do with the brakes. Anyone every go through anything similar? Anything would be greaty appreciated

when was the last time you changed your brakes? and what exactly is rough? rough on the steering wheel, or can you feel it in your seat?

its a knocking sound that speeds up and slows down depending on how fast I am traveling. I step on the brake just a bit, not even enough to tell that it's being braked, and the sound goes away. About the pads, I bought the car a few weeks ago so I don't know anything about that and its been too damn cold to work on my car right now. Plus I dont have insurance n what not on it, so I don't want to pay for it when i wont be driving the car when it messes up. So I guess I'll fix it now. A friend suggested a wheel bearing may be the problem.
