When was the timing belt last changed? If someone said it sounds like a timing problem and the timing belt hasn't been changed I would definitely check that as it would be near the end of its life. It should be changed every 60k miles.

I'd also check the ignition timing just in case. It wouldn't be too likely that it would be off but if someone said it sounds like the timing is off I'd double check that as well.

You may also check the injectors. A simple ohm reading on them will tell you if they are operational. It should be between 12 and 14 ohms if memory serves.

Its kind of strange that you aren't seeing a loss of power. Does it buck or stall or does it just sound like a diesel truck? In what way does it sound like a diesel, like the grunt of a diesel engine or the kind of tapping noise? The VE30DE available in the 92-94 SE Maxima's are notorious for sounding like a diesel when the VTC's go out. I heard one first hand and it sound exactly like a diesel, it was amazing... however, you have the VG30E so you should have that issue unless the valves are making a strange tapping noise or something. How's the oil?

Definitely have a weird issue here, hopefully we can get it solved for you.
