Have a 2005 Nissan Frontier Nismo

I realize the rotten egg smell is usually indicative of a bunk catalytic converter, but the truck is fairly new with hardly any miles?

Wondering if anyone knows if its something other then the converter, also if anyone has had this problem with this model and up?Thanx

Funny how the same topic will come up more than once..

Click the link and read the explanation I gave elunden. zerothread?id=222531

The story is the same in Canada. One time a station will get gas from a Petro Canada refinery, the next time it could come from a Shell or Texaco. This smell is a common complaint but should not cause you any concerns unless you are experiencing serious power loss or the computer starts flagging codes all over the place. ( Service engine light codes )

If the smell gets worse then you'll have to go to the dealer and have them investigate the Cats while they are still covered under a warranty.

My 2000 Xterra was covered for 5 years for Catalytic defects so I had them checked at the end of the warranty period to make sure they were both in good order.

Strong rotten egg smell is either a bad or failing catylitic convertor or a failing injector (which will ruin a catylist as well.)

Hopefully for you it's just bad gas though!

I wonder if a fouled injector can cause an engine code to flag?

But if an injector was acting up isn't there a very good chance that you will smell a rich exhaust mixture, maybe even more-so than the sulphur smell?

There are different detergent formulations and clean burning additives that are unique to each fueling chain and I do know these additives can have an effect on what odor comes from the tail pipe.

(Hell when I drink beer and chase it with hot wings I give off all kinds of weird odors!) ...yeah yeah I know "Too much info."

One could get the Exhaust Gas analyzed and see if the hydrocarbon count is higher than normal. Not me...your vehicle! Sicko!

Thanks for the input guys.

The truck is being a pig on gas lately too, but I havent experienced any power loss thats usually associated with a bunk catalytic converter. Guess the only way to solve it is an expensive trip to the dealer.

I guess I was just curious if anyone else had a similiar problem with theirs.

Perhaps an Injector Cleaning would help?

I had mine done and my fuel economy did improve slightly.

A little late here for this forum, but I have had severe rotten egg odor, and instantly fuel milge dropped to 15MPG, 2000 G20. I had the rear cat changed. The smell is gone, but no decent milage. Still at 15MPG. I have to drive over 100 miles to a Infinity dealer, to get this fixed. EGR RE-Programmed. And never a Nissan / Infinity again. My 3RD Nissan. All were problem vehicles. Lexus is next. Toyota of course. Here I found this: http://consumerguideauto.howst...2.htm Trouble SpotsConsumer Guide's® Auto Editors have scoured repair bulletins and questioned mechanics to search for commonly occurring problems for a particular vehicle. In some cases we also give possible manufacturer-suggested solutions. In many instances these trouble spots are Technical Service Bulletins posted by the manufacturer, however, we have our own expert looking at additional vehicle problems. Coolant leak: The expansion plug on the right-side intake manifold may leak coolant requiring installation of a revised manifold. (1999) Fuel odors: A rotten-egg odor from the exhaust may require reprogramming of the engine-control module. (2000) Poor transmission shift: The key may be difficult to remove and/or the shifter may be hard to move from park due to a bent spring in the shift-lever mechanism. (1999) Poor transmission shift: Unless the transmission cooler is thoroughly cleaned following a transmission repair, the newly serviced unit will likely soon fail. (1999-2002) Power seats: The power seat may not move fore and aft because the drive cable breaks. (1999-2001) Starter: Starter may grind, particularly when cold, due to loss of lubrication. Replacement starters have high-temperature grease. (1999-2000)

Vehicle noise: A clunk from the rear of the car when driving over speed bumps or curb cuts (when the back seat and trunk are empty) is fixed by installing revised springs and shock absorbers. (1998-2000) Windows: Windows may stick and make a popping noise if not used for more than a day due to problems with the rubber window guides that must be replaced. (1999) Consumer Guide® Estimated Repair CostsThis table lists costs of likely repairs for comparison with other vehicles. The dollar amount includes the cost of the part(s) and labor (based on $50 per hour) for the typical repair without extras or add-ons. Like the pricing information, replacement costs can vary widely depending on region. Expect charges at a new-car dealership to be slightly higher.
