Just bought a Certified Used 2011 Journey Coupe from an Infininti dealer. Car looks and drives great. Checking it in the darkening lot, the tire side walls looked perfect, no checks or scuffs, and the tread depth felt OK.

Next morning I noticed the tread on these OE Dunlop SP Sport Maxx A1-A A/S tires are crumbling and throwing out small chunks of rubber.

What can make a tire's tread rot, while the sidewalls still look new?
Do these tires look safe to drive?
Is it normal to leave tires this rough on a Certified car?

To each his own....but I would demand replacement. Why wasn't that caught with their 134,986 check points?

Odd though. The car really isn't old enough for dry rot......and dry rot almost always attack the sidewalls...
But what I would expect.......Tread separation perhaps.....and a blowout.......

You paid more for the CPO, because it was supposed to be better than the average used car. And average used cars don't have tires like that.

Did you check the date codes on your tires prior to purchase?

Tire above was manufactured in the 33 week of 2007. Photo taken from my previous 06 G35 tires

No.

The code on the tires is week 49 2010. That is only a four year old tire. The car was first sold 6/2011, so only in service 3 1/2 years.

Never purchase a vehicle in the dark

You should have returned the following day for a closer vehicle inspection

Purchase new tires.

Not worth risking your life and others with a blowout

Lesson learned

Visited my Infinity Dealer this morning and they exceeded all expectations.
The bad tires were overlooked in error and they are replacing all four with new tires at NO COST.
Customer Service can't get any better than that.
