well, i asked my girlfriends dad to help me with a rotor change and a pad replacement. Just factory replacements, and well i think there is now a rear rotor where there is supposed to be a front. now my pad has just cut a groove into my brand new rotor. now my dilemma is: since the groove isnt cut into where the pad grabs the rotor, it is actually cut into the horizontal part that meets where the pad grabs the rotor. i just wanna know if this is some serious damage or if i can just fix the mistake and move on with life.

Uhhh what? I got about as far as your girlfriend's dad and I lost comprehension.

Pics would be beneficial.

EDIT: I re-read it, and I think I understand it now.

If it's a rear rotor on the front, why don't you get some front rotors and put them on there? What could have caused the groove to be cut into your rotor? The only way something could have cut into the rotor is if whatever was making contact was stronger than the rotor itself.

If it's not where the pad contacts the rotor then who cares, but why would the groove be there in the first place?

Look at where the groove is and look at what could be contacting it.

Other than that I have no idea what you are trying to say.

Jesus Christ, you let someone like that help you?

How the hell can one even make a mistake like that? You guys should do an engine swap together.

ANYWAYS, get some pics up. No one can really offer decent advice when they can't see the problem.

hmm, there's no way he put a rear rotor in the fronts...

factory-wise, the rear rotors are solid/ non vented one slab of metal

the front rotors have two slabs of metal w/ horizontal vents between them...

i dunno about your vintage, but on my car, some were ABS equipped (bigger rotors) and non-ABS (smaller rotors)

but in your year, i think they all had ABS, so scratching my head as to what he installed improperly

mebbe the dust shield is rubbing? <shrugs> pix would help as others said

Thats what I was thinking. How did he reinstall the caliper with a front rotor on the rear or especially rear rotor on the front. The front rotors are twice as thick.

that's what i was trying to figure out. i feel like it would make perfect sense that something wasn't right when attempting to reinstall the calipers...

Well I am now here to try and explain what happen. Yes the rotors were way too big and that was half of the problem. But I now have the proper terminology to explain what was happening. The hat of the rotor for the rear is larger in diameter than the front as well as the width of the rear rotor it's self being larger. The hat was big enough for the inside edge of the brake pad to grind against the hat of the rotor this creatin said groove on the hat of the rotor.
