I bought my 04 G35 sedan (6s) with 23k miles. Had the 30k oil change (synthetic) and at 38k took it in for pads and tires. Much to my chagrin, I needed front rotors as the brake pads had worn a pan into the rotors. My mechanic after a little amazement and phone calls found out this is normal. Can anyone confirm and do I need to have new rotors every 30k miles?

NO you don't! you just need to get them resurfaced.. I got mine done at a tire place for $10 each (cash under the table) IDK the normal cost.. I think maybe $25 each.

Every time you get new pads you're supposed to resurface the rotors..

Yeah what Kenrik said...

You don't need to buy rotors each time, just resurface them.

As far as I understand and have read up on....

the 2003 and 2004's had high brake wear, much more than anticipated. I know that the dealers were replacing rotors due to wear every 30,000 miles when they realized this. They had to change the replacement protocol after normal wear on these models was abnormally high.

You should be able to turn your rotors 2 times before having to put new ones on though.

I've got 45k miles on mine. Brakes and rotors are fine. I inspect them everytime I rotate my OEM tires which are still okay.I do a lot of downshifting and expect to get 100k out of my brakes and perhaps 200k on the clutch. I'll probably replace the tires at 50k.

Telcoman, you and I are the old faHrts here I can tell since everything lasts a century with us and we've both owned too many cars. Anyway, rotor and brake problems have plagued the G since it's birth. There was an extension on the warranty period provided by Infiniti after much pressure from consumers, for the brakes and rotors. While you can resurface the rotors (as most folks do), some manufacturers and safety engineers are now recommending not resurfacing and instead putting new rotors in. This practice is not w/o its' critics, but it's weorth noting nonetheless.

Also, you can go to Tire Rack for a good deal and solid tech advice on this. Good luck and hope this helps.

The G's brakes have nothing on GM's prior follies! The main problem is with dust on the earlier models.

The primary reason why rotors warp is due to improper torquing between the lugs. If you have a few that are tighter than others (using a tire iron), the result could be the rotor will move slightly under braking. This movement causes the out-of-round condition.

All rotors have a minimum recommended thickness. They can be resurfaced as long as they meet this number. When a rotor is scratched, it takes much less material off than an out-of-round condition. You should be able to resurface them. I'd take it to a specialty shop such as midas or firestone to avoid the dealer's primo price...

I was always partial to the old muscle cars (Mustangs, SS, Baracuda, Vette;'s, 57 Chevy's, etc.) not only for their raw power, but b/c I could climb literally into the engine compartment and do most of my own repairs. Now I can't get into the engine because the compartment is too small and b/c of the need for removing the time release, combination locked, laser protected, bomb and fire proofed cover and gadgetry!!! But then again, this is still one very sexy machine!

Hey Drew how about the replacement. Is it the same what it was before or it is improved?

If it is the same then probably better go with an aftermarket one.

My suggestion is to use different than OEM's. Tire Rack has several that fit with various prices. Good advice given most of the time (at times the wrong advice), but you can request rotors and pads that will outlast OEM's 3X.

Hope this helps and good luck!

That's good so that should last longer.
