So I am doing a rear disk brake set up on my Datsun 510. Here is a picture of the rotor and the caliper together but it is slightly crooked. So my question is if I have to make sure the caliper is lined up with the rotor or can there be a little play .(Crookedness)It is rubbing on the top of caliper.

the only friction you should have is the pad to the rotor. if the metal of the caliper is dragging on the rotor, you need to work on your bracket. space it out or shave some off accordingly. to find out how much, use washers between the caliper and its mount.

That definately doesn't sound right, but from the picture and very brief description, it's hard to understand exactly what you mean. It looks like the caliper is slanted slightly to the outside of the wheel well? If that's the case I'd suspect the caliper bracket with that huge weld on it might be what's throwing the caliper off alignment. But I can only assume that's the problem since you failed to be specific. In what direction is it crooked? The rotor is rubbing on the top of the caliper?Do you have the same issue on the other side of the car aswell? Are those lugnuts holding the rotor tight to the hub?Are the calipers used? What do you mean by "can there be a little play"? Sliding calipers will have a fair amount of in/out free play untill pressurized with fluid. Be as specific as possible if you want people to take the time to reply to your post.

At this point I am having some new brackets made without that big weld on it. The lugs are tighten to hold the rotor and yes calipers & brakes are used.I have not yet installed on 510 since I am trying to make sure everything looks right before I install on car.Lastly I have done the other side yet.I have 2 more questions when you refer to R/L calipers what is the right side and left side. Driver / Passenger side??Also to adjust the piston on these Maxima calipers to maake the brake pad go in how do you adjust that ??

The bleed nipple should be pointing up on each side, pointing down is wrong.Just checked your pic, and the calipers are right at the top of the rotor which will most likely make them hard to bleed while still bolted to the bracket. If so, unbolt from bracket, and slide caliper(with rotor still between pads in caliper) to where nipple will point up so you can get all the air out. Then re-bolt to bracket.

Not sure what you mean about adjusting the piston on the caliper. You will either have to turn/thread the piston back inti the caliper body, or push it in depending on the design. Not sure about maxima brakes.
