So I had this discussion weeks ago based on a college prank story of a dorm room being flooded, then set with Jello over a winter recess during which power was shut off and allowed to cool.
The questions we ultimately started discussing followed:
Imagine a room entirely filled with Jello- floor to ceiling, wall to wall, with a single doorway and no windows (perhaps a cube roughly dorm room size). If you were to dive headfirst through the doorway into the jello, how far would you get? Would you displace enough jello to complete submerge? Once inside, would you be completely suspended or would your weight overcome Jello's structural capacity and begin sinking? Would you be displace enough jello and create a hole big enough to allow oxygen to continue to your head, thus allowing you to breathe (and thusly eat your way tothe other side- maybe a 2nd door)? Would you be able to move about (swim as it were)? Would clothing be a hinderance or an advantage?

I'm bored at my office and have begun pondering these questions again. We thought about sending the question into Mythbusters just to see how much it would cost to fill a room with Jello. Now I'm wondering if I could design a small scale experiment using a 4x4x4 box filled with Jello and seeing how far something can be dropped into it.
So what does NICO have to say about it? Flavor recommendations?

If you dove headfirst, I would think suffocation would be a consideration - I could be wrong.

If someone filled my room floor to ceiling the last thing I would want to do is eat some.

I agree with scotty.

i don't think it'd be as cool as you'd think it would be. if the room was 100% filled, with the jell-o still contained by the walls, floor, and ceiling, you wouldn't get far. it would all also depend on the "stiffness" of the gelatin.

Well Jello kinda of messes with the law of matter. It's a harden(solid) liquid that is inbetween states and like a... jelly(gel). Like a liquid, it would conform to whatever shape it was put in. Here is the question to throw back at you, If the room was completely full of Jello... where would the jelly be displaced to when you jumped into headfirst? I'd say you would have to eat your way in before you could jump in.

I never said I thought it would be fun- just one of those discussions that devolved into strangeness.
With a standard door size opening, I'm wondering if you could displace enough Jell-o back out the door to get even halfway (this was our main point of contention). And imagine having a good running start, so you could really dive in- there would have to be some splash-out, right? But how much? I mean, it's gelatinous, but it's not ballistics gel.

Yeah, It would displace but you may need a good deal of running room and hit a small point of entry or you may just be incurring a huge slap to the face.

It'd be the opposing force of how hard you'd run into it. There is probably some formula to figure out the drag from the clothing, floor, etc. to get the velocity and then of course the energy needed to move the gelatin... Damn this sounds like a physics experiment and a good time.

Certainly, it might be easier to slide in without clothing. But I think that would also create a better seal, whereas clothing might be more disruptive and create a larger hole and allow some wiggle room.

You would need to do this on the ground floor, too much weight otherwise.

I don't think it'd be cold enough to make an entire room of jello...but im intrigued to see your box experiment---you should definitely send it to mythbusters.

Jello does not defy any laws. You are simply able to change the shape/form of it more easily then most solids.

Think of it like lead, but with a lower modulus of elasticity.

Given the density of the Gel, speed of the dive, weight of the person, and a few other things this could be figured out with a simulation.

I can tell you that if you got completely into the gel that the entry hole would close/collapse.

Steps:

1. Lay off the weed a while.
2. Add more hot chicks and less jello to room.

After reading "The entry hole would collapse." I kinda want to see this happen, mythbusters style.
