Roof Rack Install.

I have a 98 Pathfinder XE. It did not have a roof rack. Instead it just had some places where you could clip on a tower of some sort and bars from an aftermarket rack maker. I bought a rack off a 96 LE and it has 6 rubber pads that look like they should bolt down where those clips are. However, the clips that are in place are not bolts they are just flat round tops looks like these clips are either rivited to the roof or they are tightened from the inside and just slot into the clips to keep them from turning on the outside.

can i get these off if i take out the headliner or are they permanent unless i cut them off. Has anyone ever done this.

I've only owned an '03 and '04, which is why I didn't initially answer. But since you pleaded so much, I'll give my best.
