ok so i have a sunroof, and i was thinking of a way to get rid of it altogether, and possibly add some more head room. so heres what i came up with:

what if i removed the glass part of the sunroof, and all of the brackets thereof, and got a piece of metal larger than the size of the sunroof hole, and somehow molded a hump into it, i saw on tv once where a guy did it to his racecar and they named the bump after hime, but i forget who it was, or what car it was, but it mightve been a gt40. said hump would improve head/helmet clearance would it not? after you get the hump in it, you simply weld the metal to the roof and paint it and so forth. are there any direct flaws to this plan??? i was thinking that it would be neat once i pull my car off the street for good. discuss.

It was the GT40 that received the Gurney Bubble.

I would recommend going with a double bubble styled roof like an RX-7. It would give it a more symmetrical look. I don't know how well it would blend with the lines on the S13 though.

When you say taking it off the streets, is it going to be a track only vehicle? If so, you might gain the extra headroom you need by just removing the headliner and simply welding a flat piece in the place of the sunroof.

i was thinking about doing something like this on my 626 for weight reduction, i was just going to remove the whole sunroof assembly, and weld or mold a piece of metal so that itd sit flush with the roof and then paint over it. as far as making a bump, would it really help with head room? on my 626 the sunroof didnt really even come over my head, i guess if the 240's is wider and you need more room and a hump would acctually help then i say go for it. might look kinda goofy, but whatever it takes to protect your dome

yeah, im thinking ill eventually take it off the road and just race it, because its worth practically nothing now, unless i find an autocrosser thats just dying for an rhs13.

yeah Gurney! thats what it was, thanks.

I could care less if it looks a bit goofy, Function > Form, but i dont think it would look to bad anyway. what kind of metal would you use dor this? just a sheet of aluminum?

Well why not get yourself a roof scoop and mold it to a piece of aluminum and then weld that to the roof of your car, this way you would have looks and weight savings and if you set it up with a set of fans you could use it for added interior cooling. or if you don't want that you can set it up so the air sucked in would vent down 2 hoses that runs down the interior rear quarter to your rear wheels, it would aid in the cooling of your rear brakes as well as give you a little more down force. It might sound stupid but its what the roof scoops on professional race cars are used for. The ones on the WRC Rally cars bring in more cool air into the cockpit and the JGTC cars use them for brake cooling and downforce purposes.

i dont exactly have the know how or tools or materials to do alot of that. All of that is a really cool concept though, and I plan on doing something like that eventually, ive just been thinking about it for a while.

Hes right, a FUNCTIONAL roof scoop would definetily own. It would be easier than custom fabbing a bubble on your roof.

the Gurney Bubble on a repro gt40. Aparently you can purchase a Gurney Bubble for your own project if you want. Something about going down the Mulsaine(sp?) straight at 200+ mph w/ you head sticking above the top of the car structure seems a little nuts to me but thats why Dan Gurney is one of my favorite drivers of all time

that roof scoop idea is definitely tops, that's really sounding useful for cars where the airconditioning isn't functional...or never there in the first place! lol but I think sunrooves are cool on the whole...but I like the ones that you can stick yourself out of more than the pop-up ones lol
