i am not one to say this but this has been up alot SEARCH... what kind of racing you want to do and stuff like that... best bet is to get the nhra rule book and build a cage to that spec...

I agree with USsil80. Check the rule books. Every sanctioning body that requires you to have a cage will tell you what it needs to be made out of and how many bends per piece, etc. If they don't then your missing something. I think SCCA and NASA require 1.5 x .120 DOM or 1.75 x .095 DOM for 2500 lb. to 3000 lb. cars.

DOM metal is ok but if you have the mone then go chromemoly.. it is lighter and stronger

Keep in mind it may be banned in some racing sanctioning bodies, like SCCA's autox, last I read...

It may be lighter, but the stronger part is up to debate depending on wall thicknesses, fatigue resistance, etc. I believe for chromoly to be as strong/stronger than DOM, it must be in a wider diameter/thicker wall, which leads to clearance issues, (i.e. nasa pro-racing minimums for my vehicle is 1.75" DOM or 2" CM) etc. I'll let the experts over @ the fabrication forums handle that:

bend-tech.com chromoly vs dom vs herw discussion
bend-tech.com wrote:NASCAR has a min weight so the teams can afford to do this. Drag racing rules are not structured this way. I am building a cage in a 73 Duster for a close friend. I gave hime 3 options.1: Cheapest - HREW tubing2: Lightest - 4130 Chromoly3: Strongest - DOMThis is based on the NHRA rule book which has different thickness requirements for 4130 than other types of steel tubing. He choose option 2 and I did not plan on performing any post weld heat treatment on the welds.

well my 240 is just a project car not daily driver and i figured id put in a D! spec cage since thats all im going to use the car for is drift but i even called them and they said "6 point with a steel door 8point without" and as for specs they said just make it safe for the driver

Cusco's cage isn't approve by any racing organizations in the US as far as I know and will not pass tech. The only reason some drift organizations let people use the Cusco cage is they don't require a cage and it being there doesn't matter.

Autopower sells a 6 point bolt in that supposedly SCCA legal. I personally think the best way to go is get a custom cage welded in.

im a fabricator by trade and a mechanic but my work is with tractors the big ones. im a certified welder and know my tools well im just having trouble finding the right specs for formula d, and i havent checked nopi's yet. i should just go with 240 time attack specs that should cover drift easy. i just need to find how many points and tube thickness and diameter if anyone gets a chance to find it please let me know

your best bet is to run a nhra spec cage... one that is good for the 9.99 class.... get the rule book for them and you are good

you may be certified and stuff but i wouldnt recommend building a cage, better to have a good cage builder do your first one, it takes a lot more than knowing how to weld to build a good cage

chromoly is overrated, its not even lighter, youre just allowed to use less material because its "stronger," but because of this critical structural pieces get left out, and in the end it ends up being a worse cage

have a DOM cage built this time around, find out what diameter and wall thickness you need from your rule set

i know i am way more capable of building a spec cage than most of the **** i've been seeing. even at the track i see alot of horrible builds anyway nopi's specs are in section 3 of their new rules and they are pretty technical just too bad i cant get it printed out... its got a messed up backround you cant get rid of

nopi's specs are retarded

read the NASA CCR and youll get a better idea of what a real cage takes...plus most of the strength is in the design, and thats why i said get a *GOOD* cage builder...if you care to take the trip to LA technosquare does awesome work
