I've been looking at some ways to strengthen the chassis without compromising the cars look with the top down, but still be legal for a road race or other sanctioned event.

Would it be possible to have a low roll bar that doesn't stick above the body and have a separate top piece that could be bolted onto the bottom half to make the roll bar legal race height?

to make sure I'm trying to get this out right here is a quick pic. Sorry for the poor quality and if this was ever covered before.

I only plan on pushing maybe 350hp with this car if it ever gets to that much.

Awsome pic man, thats an interesting question though. I dont think it would be that safe, or race legal IMO

Its a cool idea but ...probably wouldn't be race legal and very safe. Dont most bolt in cages not even pass as race legal? If bolt-ins do pass you could just make a bolt-in 4 point and make it one piece so you can take it out when you want.

The roll bar is there for in the event the car rolls over. Bolt on extensions like that are weak compared to a continuous loop and would break too easily in the event of a rollover. I don't have the NASA or SCCA rules book memorized, but I'm fairly certain they mention the main hoop of a bar needs to be continuous.

I thought it sounded like a good idea. I thought if the right bolts and flanges were used it probably could have taken the abuse of a roll over.

I didn't know anything about roll cages to begin with. At least I didn't come up with an idea of Direct Exhaust Injection to get rid of the need for a turbo.

For street use, it would be perfectly fine, I feel. But I'm just saying that as far as I know, the sanctioning rules bodies out there wouldn't allow it.

Absolutely no road racing body will allow you to go on the track (unless you happen to be like some guy's best friend or something).

If you are going to track your vert, get a real roll bar, you don't really want to be thinking "damn, I shoulda just got a roll bar that protected my head instead of one that looks really good..." in a situation where you would need one, would you?

I think verts w/ rollbars look great; of course, I'm probably a little bias:

240sx convertible weld-in roll bar kit

*EDIT: with some work you could possibly convert this kit into a bolt-on type deal where you only put it on for race weekends... however, if you are road racing at all in a convertible, I'd seriously recommend welding the kit in.

Yes, I made a whole write up on it. My particular bar was made for maximum height while allowing for roll bar padding, full top operation, & interior plastic panels.

In that pic it looks really sweet. I did read your thread about your roll bars. I guess the look of it is finally growing on me, and I do commute 50 miles a day on back country roads, so you never know whats going to happen.

You said they're around $400-500 right? I think I am going to buy one in May.

Got it bookmarked, I most likely will not get it next day aired though.
