I have a 2008 Rogue with 33,000 miles (and about 4 months out of warranty). A year ago Nissan agreed to install a new transmission in it because I was having issues with the first one. I was driving it on the highway last week and went to adjust the passenger outside mirror. As soon as I hit the switch I lost all power steering and the red PS light came on. I drove it home let it sit for 20 minutes and restarted it and the power steering was working again. Took it to the local dealer where its been for 3 days and they determined it needed a new steering column due to the fact that the torque angle sensor is defective. Does this make sense? I asked if a new sensor could be ordered but they said no, the entire steering column had to be replaced costing about $1000.00. Thanks so much.

Don't know what that sensor is but, if the sensor is built with the steering column and can't be unhook, unbolted, unplugged from it then yea probably need new steering rack.
.try to see if another shop will be cheaper. Or go old school and put your back in to it.

Sounds about right. If the PS is indeed faulty the entire unit has to be replaced. It's not an inexpensive proposition either.

The electric power steering unit used in the Rogue is located under the dash. It's a one piece unit complete with the steering column going from the unit to the steering wheel. Cost is ~ $730. This is NOT a DIY item to replace as it requires specialized tools and knowledge.

Hey thanks to all friends here. The dealer spoke with the district rep and the rep's first question was, Is he servicing the auto at the dealer and how much does he spend? Well, other than warranty issues, I change the oil and filters myself so the answer was no, but once she was given my very nice letter detailing the 13 Nissan's I have owned over the last 25 years, beginning with my beautiful red, 1986 300 ZX, she agreed to cover the repair. Thanks to her also, whoever she is.

That's great to hear that Nissan is willing to take responsibility for the repair bill so that they ensure they keep their loyal customer!
