As far as the protection you are describing, I see it as two different issues.
1) Esthetics: Installing a "Smoked" cover because it looks cool2) Protection: Installing a cover of some sort to protect the lens.
Be aware if you are installing the covers because you like the way it looks be prepared to loose any defense you may have arguing you installed them to protect the lens against damage. In many states it is "illegal" to have anything installed over the headlights while the vehicle is in operation with the lighting system activated. In other words you can have covers installed during the day… but they must be removed if conditions require the use of your headlights.
I'll have to agree with philipa_240sx that I've never had a plastic lens shatter, while I have lost several of the old glass ones over many years of driving.
That said... I'd prefer glass. Plastic (acrylic) lenses have their shortcomings. Almost inevitable, your Rogue headlights will eventually cloud up. As you drive particles of debris, dirt, grit and gravel are being thrown back by the cars you are following. Several years of this high speed grit hammering away at the soft plastic lens serves to "sand blast" the lens leaving them clouded and foggy. Add to that the UV damage from sunlight which will cause them to turn yellow as well as making them brittle... which can eventually lead to hairline cracks and internal fogging if you keep the car long enough.
To counteract these problems I installed one of the clear “3M type” paint protection film over the lenses. It’s completely invisible and super tough. While it doesn’t look cool like the grey or smoke lens covers I know my lenses are protected from the UV rays against yellowing as well as pitting and clouding caused by road debris.
I ended up choosing to have VentureShield becuase there was a expert installer in my area, but there multiple companies that sell variations of the film. As you can see in this photo after the film was installed, you can't even tell its there... (unless you do a close up inspection and spot the edges of the film:
Invisiblemask (and a couple companies) sell precut headlight kits for the Rogue. You can even get them in several colors but then you are subject to getting a ticket again, which is why I went with the clear film. If you go to this link and scroll down about 1/2 way you'll see the headlight kit.
