We are in the market for a small suv, down sizing from full size. Narrowed to 2, Mazda CX5 and Nissan Rogue SL. Stopped in at local dealerships....

CX5
We liked it a lot, drove really well, fit and finished seemed really good. The Mazda salesman of course knocked the CVT transmission in the Rogue

Rogue SL
We loved it. Seemed a bit more classy on the interior with more features. Leaning to the Rogue. The Nissan salesman of course thought the CVT was the best thing since slice bread.

It will be daily driver for my wife. We do usually travel to the mountains in Tn once or twice a year. Looking for some feed back on the CVT transmission

Thanks

The CVT in the Rogue is not bad in terms of how it drives. The ride is smooth and refined, and the noise is not annoying like it is with my Ford Escape Hybrid which also uses a CVT. It still makes for an unexciting drive though. And like all current CVT transmissions, the towing capacity is a bit of a joke. Jury is still out on reliability as this iteration of CVT from Jatco was first used by Nissan in the 2013 Altima, so it hasn't been out too long.

If you want a ride that is more smooth than fun, the Rogue would be the better choice.

I live in northeast Tennessee and the Rogue can handle the mountains. It will make a bit of noise going up steep inclines at speed but it is not bad.

I would say go for the Rogue. Even though these CVTs is a new generation it has factory warranty 100K i think that it more than enough to trust. I have a 2010 altima with almost 100K never done any other services than oil changes (engine), air filters, tires and brakes, front ones at 35K and i'm still using the second set and i'm about to hit 100K. The rear brakes are still the factory installed.

If you could see my car you might think that i just took it out from the lot. Nissan's are tough and can stand the uses and abuses very well, specially the interior and engines. I dont think that Mazda could say the same.

The 2014 CVT is covered under the power-train warranty and that is 5yr/60,000
