So, I'm about to enter my first winter with the Rogue.

Today was really cold and damp, ugly !!! Rainy and like 2 degrees

For the first time since I got the car in April my brakes squeeled loudly for the first three stops this morning, after that back to normal, no more squeeling and quiet.

Obviously, I attribute this to the awful weather today, coldness combined with moisture/rain on metalic brakes.

So, my question is the following.

Are these brakes always gonna squeel the first couple of stops in winter cold weather....or was today just a really bad combination of cold and wet and it just reacted that way.

I'm hoping that if its just cold they won't squeel, am I right in thinking this?

I'm in Alberta, last winter was a real beeotch here, cold, snowy, wet slushy - everything and I've never heard the brakes squeel ever. So I'd recommend that if you do here this on a regular basis you might wanna get them inspected, but I wouldn't get really excited about it.

The brake rotors may squeal occasionally under some conditions. This is normal

Continuous brake squeal is a sign of a bigger problem... get the brakes checked immediately.

Thanks guys,

Its definitely not continuous.

This morning it did it the first couple of stops and like I said after that it was quiet.

Than I left the car parked for about 2 1/2 hours and again the first two to three stops it squealed and after that quiet as a mouse.

I left the car parked for a half hour to get groceries and it didn't squeal at all the first couple stops.

Tonight I went somewhere after leaving the car parked for three hours and it did it the first two stops, than it went away.

I think its the combination of cold and dampness of today that's causing this, I guess I'll have to see on a really cold but dry day, I suspect I won't hear anything.

I know on warmer rainy days I hear nothing.

Anyways if it sticks around I'm way too stuborn to let it go, I'll probably get the brakes lubed or something when I do the winter tires.

It's a very good idea to get the brakes cleaned and serviced at least once per year.

If you are handy and work on your own cars, you can follow my technical article on brake service here and do it yourself:

Well as I suspected this morning was cold but not humid at all and of course no squeaking out of the driveway...everything was nice.

I really think yesterday was just really bad weather conditions cold and humid and it created that issue.

Sometimes if you notice that, it may be that after leaving the car for hours and it's raining or damp that the rotors will have some rust spots and these are cleared off as soon as the brakes make a good rotation around the rotors.. After it rains all night and I drive my Rogue, I give them a good braking down my street (just by touching the brakes once or twice) to get that off. Then it's a smooth braking all the way to school/work,etc...

Yeah, that's when I get it, a squeal on the first two stops after the car has been sitting for hours in humid/cold temp.

But I talked to a Nissan tech service guy and he said that its recomended to service your brakes every six months...clean them and lube them.

I've had the car 8 months and have yet to do that....so maybe my breaks do need a good cleaning and lubing...I'll do it when I get the winters put on to get a cheaper price.

I had exactly the same problem two weeks ago. I went to the service to have 12000km maintenance done anyway so I told them about the squeek. They changed the pads and cleaned the rotors. It was coverend under the waranty and now is squeek free.

i would go get it checked out.

Yeah, I'm gonna get them to check it out soon, within the next few weeks...I only have 7000kms but it is due for maintenance.

The thing is that servicing the brakes is $120 at Nissan...cleaning and lubing them if need be I was told.

But if I wait to do it when putting winters on its only $80...but that means I'll have to buy winters from the dealer ???

If I get winters elsewhere and have them service my brakes at the same time it'll be cheaper but what if I need new pads ??? I'd have to go back to Nissan during a busy time of year.

I guess I'm gonna get a quote from Nissan on winters...if they're priced reasonably I might just go there and get all done in one shot...brakes serviced, oil change and new winters.
