I need some help from you guys. I ordered bearings for the CA through work this past week. I got them for an '89 Pulsar, but looking at the part #'s for the Pulsar and an '84-86 200sx turbo- they're the same soooo..

They came in and everything looks okay except there's a groove in the middle of the mains, which is not there on the set off my engine. I don't dare put those things in without knowing 100% they aren't going to ruin a perfectly good crank.

All in all I wasn't impress with the quality of the bearings so I sent them back anyway. Can anyone direct me to where I can get a good set of rods and mains? I really do appreciate the help guys!

-Mike

OH man! Those were good bearings! Grooved mains is a GOOD thing. Almost all race type bearings are grooved.

Regardless, the rods and mains from the Pulsar or the 200sx will work.

Wouldn't grooves in the bearings mean more clearance and therefore less oil pressure?

Thats a good point about the oil pressure, and as for the groove, Im almost positive its only one side......like 1 shell half only.

I saw grooves in both halves..

So the conclusion I'm getting from you guys is it's okay to use those bearings (federal mogul from Advance Auto), but using them is all the more reason to have a oil pressure gauge. Does that sound right guys?

On a side note: These grooved style bearings are the only set Advance carries.

stock pulsar bearings dont have a groove in them, but the groove isnt a bad thing.

When i rebuilt my ca18det the bearings i got the bearing that goes into the block had a groove and main cap bearing had no groove. Never had a problem with em.

I also heard from reputable engine builders that the grooved bearings are for performance due to them being able to hold more oil and therefore minimising the chance of metal to metal friction.

Hope that helps.

You nailed it. They also flow more oil to the wrist pins, rod bearings, etc.
