I'm no real tech, but I've dealt with quite a few cars that have had rod knock. even "slight rod knock". Each one needed machining done to fix the issue.
The most recent one was a CA that had started knocking mid auto-x day. We turned her off, got the trailer out and took it back to the owner's house. Once we pulled the motor and got to the rod bearings, one had started to get flattened on the top curvature from oil starvation. It was a few steps from spinning.
All in all, the crank needed machining, and the rod needed reconditioning, and that wasn't a total spin. That was a slight knock.
What I'm getting at is that you should really consider seeing the extent of the knock, and make a judgement call on what you need to get done.
