Ok,

Just put the rebuilt engine back in the MR2 and it sounds like this. Is this rod knock or a collapsed lifter?

I think rod knock would sound a bit louder.

My brother's 3S-GTE made the same noise, turned out to be a loose EGR to head connection.

Since you don't have an EGR on it, sounds like a lifter.

Would a EGR leak cause rough idle issues as awell. I blocked it off but idk if it sealed all the way.

Definitely not rod knock. Rod knock as to be BAD to do it at idle. Plus it's a definite "knock" sound. Lifters are more like a "tick". I honestly didn't really hear either. I heard a lot of squeaking. I think it's exhaust related.

Thats what i was thinking to but, the only reason i say its something mechanical is idles high and wont drive with out bogging down.

Leaking egr would definitely cause a rough idle and high idle.

Don't know much about those engines, but if it has hydraulic lifters, let it run a while. Since it was just rebuilt, chances are, the lifters still have air in them. Lifters that are slightly worn might click a little, but hydraulic lifters that are dry usually have much more play than a typical worn lifter and consequently makes much more noise. I had a similar experience with a SOHC KA many, many years ago. Scared the crap out of me. Let it run for like 10 minutes and it went away by itself. At the very least, rule this out.

Yea, when we rebuilt the head in my wife's Miata (they're infamous for lifter noise, even when they haven't been rebuilt), it took a good 30 min of idling to get all the lifters to pump up.

Thats what i thought it was to but it never went away even with me driving it and everything. Anytime i get on the gas the turbo spools like mad but that car falls flat on its face.

That sounds like a big intake leak. Does it make boost?

Be honest i didn't pay attention to the gauge b/c it sounded horrendous so i just babied it back down the road and haven't driven it since.

It sounds like its on the upper right corner of the engine.
