my car was making a horrible noise so i took it to a mechanic and they said it has broken rod bearings and a broken gasket which leaked most of my oil out. My question is what would be a good price to replace the bearings that connect the rod to the crank and my pulley gasket? thanks for your help

the thing is that if you actually have destroyed rod bearings, then your going to need to have the crank re-ground or at least polished, basically you are looking at a full rebuild, which will probably set you back almost a grand just for machine work. If the problem isn't bad enough to warrant re-grinding the crank and you can get away with JUST replacing the bearings it will be much more affordable, I have no idea how much though since that's do it yourself work in my world :)

Sorry to jump in on this thread, I hope you don't mind. A car I am looking at has had this diagnosed as well. Well, it's the connecting rod bearings and I was told it's not serious (in this case) and would cost about $100 for the parts and 2- 4 hrs labor. Or a total of $250 CAN.

Is it possible for this to be a simple R&R without further damage done? Are serious problems quite noticible or only known once you get into the engine?

that price would be with the motor still in the car. thats kind of a half-assed job, and the damage cant really be fully assesed until the oil pans pulled and the rod caps removed.

Crazy: It would be better to buy a used motor, rebuild yours, or buy a rebuilt motor with a good warranty(3yrs/75kmiles) For a ASE Tech to rebuild that motor and reinstall it you will be looking at about $2,000. Probably more like $2500 though.

skazzi: it is just like Ivory said. Damage can't really be asessed until you pull the bearings. But doing it that way is not correct and it won't last long if at all. I've seen it done, but I've never seen it last. Not even on a crank that looked good.
