Hey,Just asking those who have done or know how to change rod bearings a couple quick questions. First, I understand that there are different thicknesses available for the bearings, but I recently purchased a set of rods (one of mine was slightly bent) which included the bearings as well. Both sets of rods have "0" punched into them along with the corresponding piston/rod number for each cylinder. Would I be able to resuse the bearings since they both share "0"? The only bearing that did show wear was the lower one which was attached to the bent rod (the bearing is attached to the piece that wraps around the crank and attaches to the actual rod) The all the other bearings are in perfect condition with no signs of wear. Also, for those wondering, my crank is unscathed from the bent rod. I understand some have "1" punched on it so I know that they aren't the same. Also, if I cannot resuse them, where do I find the markings (on the crank and block??) to verify what size bearings to use? Thanks in advance!!!!!

unless you're reusing your old rods, you won't be able to use the old bearings. there are two methods to getting the correct bearings for your motor. i don't know if you got a set of aftermarket rods or not, so the first option might or might not work. It's usually for OEM replacement rods.

Option 1:You'll need an SR FSM. You can find one at http://www.zeroyon.com Next, find the section for engine internals in the mechanical section. In it, it explains how you can use the numbers stamped on the rods and the numbers stamped on your crank to determine what bearing to get. It has a table and everything so it will all be spelled out for you.

Option 2:Take it to a machine shop that does work on engines, tell them it's a Nissan SR20 motor and you'd like to have your aftermarket rods measured and have them figure what size bearing to use for each rod.

Well I pulled my crank out last night and found these numbers:

1 2 1 1 1 1 1 2 2

I have the FSM and it says that the top number is for the Main Journal Grade Number and the bottom is the Pin Journal Grade Number.By the looks of it, I'm suppose to use the Pin Journal Grade Number. So I am suppose to get a grade 1 for rods 1-2 and grade 2 for rods 3-4. Can anbody verify that I am correct??

I will check my FSM when I get home today, but I am sure that someone will verify before then.

You should have a chart or something where you take the number (1,1,2,2) and cross it with the number on the rods to come up with the size bearing.

Are you running OEM rods or aftermarket?

I have the OEM rods. I don't have access to my FSM right either so hopefully somebody can verify before I get off of work so I can just run down there and pick them up. Anyways, thanks for everybodies help in advance.

according to the FSM (which you really need to study before you start replacing engine internals) you need to select your main bearings by measuring the journals and the connecting rods. If you use a new crankshaft, then you can do it according to the chart.

Yes, I understand that I will have to measure the journals and so forth for the main bearings, but all I actually need is 1/2 (since it comes in pairs for each rod) of a rod bearing. Everything else on the motor is in excellent shape. All of my other bearings, rod and main, are still in excellent condition with no scarring or traces of wear on them. Only one I need is the lower half of the rod bearing for the #4 piston/rod. The numbers on the crank read 1 1 2 2, so would it be true that I need a #2 grade bearing for the #4 piston/rod?

yes. but if you need to replace a bearing in it's full pair. don't use just half of the bearing. they're designed as a whole unit, and since you get the whole pair, you might as well use the new one.
