MY car started making a light knocking noise that is coming from under the valve cover.. I know its not the timing chain because it only seems to happen above 3k rpm, and increases with engine rpm.. it sounds almost identical to when not enough oil has been thrown up on the valvetrain, but I checked my oil like I do every couple weeks and it was fine.. what makes this hard for me to diagnose is that the noise isnt noticeable in lower rpms, OR if the motor is at 3k and up but I am not accelerating, just keeping the car steady at a certain rpm.. the instant I give it gas the knocking noise re-appears...

Any ideas?

like I said I tried searching for a good hour but I didnt find anyone iwth a problem quite like mine

I did a search, and I didnt really find many in depth explanations on how to tell which lifter is bad, and how to adjust/replace them.. basically all I found out is I have hydraulic lifters, and that I can replace them with solid lifters, but Im not really interested in doing that seeing as Im probably going to sell this car once I get her back to running smooth

well its really hard to tell which lifters are bad, you can get a general idea. If it is really far gone the lifter cylinder will be stuck and not move, good ones should move up and down freely and have "spring". Look for good sets at the wrecking yards, sometimes you can catch new sets on ebay, or you can always buy new. Set of solid lifters goes for about $200

the lifters must be checked when they are not pushing a valve, or removed.

pardon the stupid questions.. but how do I check them exactly.. do I just grab one and try to move it up and down? what if its loose?

do you have AIM or MSN? I know virtually nobody with experience on KA or nissan motors in general, I promise I wont bog you down with too many questions =P

I'm going through the same thing right now. I had the head rebuilt because I thought it had a bad cam or valves, but it still does it. They told me the same thing at the shop when I picked it up. It's hard to tell for sure if they're good or not. If they don't move at all (when off the valve) they're bad. If they don't push back out when depressed then they're probably bad too.
