hi,

i have had two people tell me my rockers or lifters are "clacking" together...

how hard are they to adjust? is it just a shim?

Its a common problem on startup, but they do sometimes fail to keep oil pressure and they start to get noisey, best to get some second hand replacements and swap over the failed ones, its not good to leave them too long. And there is no shim, just a direct swap with the new ones.

Best to check your oil pressure. I've never seen a set of failed hydraulic lifters in the CA engine and I have seen over 40 of these motors ride off into the sunset without a glitch in that area. if your oil is not reaching the top of your motor, then your oil pump is suspect.

boost_boy, i think you're right..

i have a major oil leak coming from the return line on my t28 turbo.... thats probably causing the sound because im always running pretty low on the dipstick for oil.

this morning i found out the hard way that my car is holding no oil.. i filled it up the previous night so i didnt have to fill it up in the morning because the leak was pretty consistant for the last week.

i drove about 2kms on the "freeway" @ 5psi and then my oil light came on.. i drove about another 250meters to my destination to check the oil and it was dry.. and holding no oil when i filled it.

maybe i will be in the market for a new ca18 when i fix this leak :(

Believe me, you are doing damage to it, but the CA18DET is so forgiving in some cases. Your rod bearings are in deep trouble and look for a knock when you start seeking power from your motor. But in the mean time, fix your problem as soon as you can.

boost_boy, do you know what connects the oil return line to a t28 turbo? is it a o-ring or a crushdown connector that is clamped?

i went to a semi turbo shop but they couldnt help me.. they gave me a bunch of free gaskets but paper gaskets for the turbo not the oil return..

thanks

The return line is a paper gasket. I used RTV on mine, but USE IT SPARINGLY. If you put too much on it, the extra can get into the oil pan, and that is a bad thing.

the pan just has a hose that clamps to it, the turbo has a metal like with a flange on it that attaches to the turbo. goto advance auto or any other parts store, and ask them for a roll of gasket paper. they should have cork, some green stuff, and some thats black , get the black. goto where they have the JB weld and rtv, and get this little bottle of copper sealent its a lil copper color bottle(the gasket roll might be there along side it). get an xacto knife and trace the oil drain pipe flange and there is your gasket.

this sounds like a much more serious leak. and even with this leaking it wouldnt leak out over night, there is somthing bigger and lower to the ground leaking. like the oil pressure switch, or a main seal also it there a big puddle anywhere?

yes, it leaves huge puddels..

when i was running the t25 turbo... i had no leaks at all.. so thats why i think its the t28 turbo oil return line..

it kind of looks like its leaking from around the turbo too... when i look at the engine

RTV = Room Temperature Vulcanizer. It's basically a liquid sealant that hardens into a rubbery kinda stuff. You can also do as Jon said with the black gasket stuff and the copper sealant. Probabally a better way than the RTV anyway. Also as jon said, you shouldn't be loosing THAT much oil throug the return line. I think you have a leak in the oil pan/oil pan gasket. I'd get under the car and find out EXACTLY where it's leaking from.
