Hey everyone, I recently pulled my head (head gasket blew on cylinder number 4) and am rebuilding the head but I can't seem to find one of my rocker arm shims...In fact, I stupidly didn't record which shim goes to which rocker arm so I'm going to have to reshim everything - which means I need to get a new set of shims right? Where can I get these - preferably locally (Bay area)? Can I use a sr20de's shims? I need to get my car running soon so help would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance!

you think? dammit man, remember!

I dont have this problem, but it would be good to know. I know for sure all the shim guides are the same size across the board.

The shims are the same unless you have went with aftermarket cams or springs.

there are two shims - one with slots on the top and ones that are completely flat - where do the slotted ones go and where do the flat ones go? i took the head apart in such a rush i forgot to remember these details (plus i was rebuilding a semi-truck engine at the time..)

i'm trying to slap the head back together as fast as possible as my car is hogging up shop space at my friends shop

Alright well I thought I would go ahead and say just incase if any else is wondering does not matter if you look from the left side or right side of the head the flat shim goes on the right valve.

I know for sure that most of the shims are different sizes. I done plenty of SR's s13 and s14's maybe a couple were all almost the same size so I didn't had to order new shims. Just measure your shims and guide to be sure, the guides should be the same size but not all the shims are.

All the info is in the FSM

The Shim is the flat peice of metal= Valve on the Right.

The guide is the peice of metal with the slot in the middle of it= Valve on the Left.I Hope this helps you i made it real fast on MS PAint.

Any year that has an SR20 in it. I typically call in for a 97 model SE-R. Tell us if they tell you a 3.0mm shim doesn't exist. My JDM service manual has the shim thicknesses listed at like 2.8 and 3.2.

all the guides are the same height 3mm. (the ones with the slot)

Shims are the ones that have different sizes to adjust your rocker arm height position. (the flat ones)

The tolerance spec called out by the FSM is the difference in height between the guide and the shim is .001 inches.

I stopped posting on the forum for a while but I kindda got really disgusted by all the misinformation here.

GL to all.

BTW, .001 inches of height difference is AFTER being put on the valve stems.

So, after you put them on the valve tips, you use a dial indicator to measure the difference in height between the two and if its w/in .001 inches, you are good.
