Episode 1:

While sitting down in late December and doing my racing budget for this year, it became clear that I was going to be staring down the barrel of yet another year in autocross purgatory due to the economic hit I was going to take from competing in an east coast time trial tour. My Corolla, while functional regionally, is absurdly under-built for it's current class (Street Mod) and still needs quite a bit of money to lower it down to a class it can be competitive in (F Street Prepared). There is nothing wrong with regional competition, but I'm always trying to push myself further and national level competition is what I'm aiming for, and as evidenced by the shredding I took at the DC Pro Solo tour stop last year (http://sololive.scca.com/2010DCPro/SM.html), attempting to do so in the Corolla in it's current trim is a total waste of time/money.

Head in hands, I began making my 2011 motorsports season schedule (http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?sr ... a/New_York) and looking at all the national level events I was going to miss this year. I came to September, looked at the dates for the SCCA National Championship and thought, "Well, another year of watching everyone else go to Nationals while treading water regionally." Little did I know that my luck was about to change.

January came around and it was time for my winter test. Some changes to the Corolla's rear suspension meant that I had to get it properly dialed in before the start of the season, luckily NASA (http://www.nasaracing.net/) has recently been hosting an event in late January down in the Richmond area, which is about a three hour drive for me. The previous year I did it by myself and was fairly bored, so this year I invited a few of the DC regional folk, among them was local DC F125 driver Danny Kao.

Danny had just bought a new Mazdaspeed 3 that he was dying to try out, so we set out for Richmond where the North would invade the South again.

SCCA Philly region driver and NICO resident, Christine Warren (skydragoness), choking... Booooooooooo =P She did take awesome photos though as most of the ones I have of this event were done by her.

With pre-season testing in the bag, Danny began talking about running the Mazdaspeed3 in D-Stock this year. He tossed around the idea for a couple weeks and it was at that moment that I threw a bid to co-drive with him and buy half the tires. After mulling it over for a bit longer, the Kao/Newman show began.

Danny began sourcing parts for the Stock build, I ordered by set of tires, another set of wheels and tire blankets for grid. We talked about what national level events we'll hit along the way to the National Championship. Danny sourced outside help to try to sort out the car as it's a rather blank canvas in terms of tire pressures and shock settings. We began gearing up for what will hopefully be one hell of a ride this year.

Looks good man. Glad to hear you're getting closer to your goal of running the national circuit. Keep up the good work. Man, I wish I lived closer to you folks too. It would be nice to have people to talk to that actually know what they're talking about.

Thanks =) Also, our first National Tour stop is near Sparks, Georgia, if that's near you. We'll be there on the 12th and 13th of March for the Dixie National Tour. If you get the inclination, feel free to come out and watch and hang out.

Ah thanks! I think Danny did a great job designing them and SSC Ting & Graphics (http://www.ssc-tint.com/) produced them.

Farthest north I think we'll be going is for the Delaware National Tour. I've been hearing that the Northeastern Divisional Championship will be in NY/NJ'ish but I'm not sure if the car owner is up to it.

Autocross aside, I'll be up at Lime Rock and NJMP this year doing time trials. In fact my first time trial of the year will be at Lime Rock in April. My motorsports calendar is in the first post of this thread. If you wanna come out and see what's going on, that'd be awesome. If you wanna come out and crew, that'd be even more awesome, as I'll be doing a lot of testing on low fuel levels and gathering some tire data from that first event.

We were going to try to get the ST car ready for that event, but buying things like houses is expensive, so we are going to skip it. Toledo has better pavement. We might head to ATL if you'll be there. If you're coming up this way to LRP, you should make a stop at Devens for an NER race! If you don't get up to us, then I'll see you at Nats. I won a free entry at our annual banquet, so now I *have* to go :)

I had a friend in a DS MS3 for a few years...he has since gone the way of the NA Miata.

I was also under the impression that there was no NE divs this year? Unless it's going to be a Philly/NNJR thing, but then how fair is that?!

Lime Rock is Apr 16th. I'll get in contact as time approaches and see if you're still available. We'd be happy to have extra hands =)

Will do Joel. I may miss that event though, as there is a DC region autocross that day and if things aren't going well in D-Stock, then may pull the plug on doing the Time Trial and get extra seat time in the MS3.

We're also doing Toledo =) No Pro's though, as Danny doesn't want to subject his new car to the launches. I'm currently trying to find co-drives for the Pro's. I'm on the fence with the NJ pro right now.

I'll look at the NE calendar and see what coincides with when I'll be up north. If I can get one of my ITA or Spec Miata friends to go with me and give me a co-drive, I'd be down. My race car, an Improved Touring B MR2, is a piss poor autocrosser and has horrible classing due to the IT to SP crossover (it's a CSP car that comes no where close to CSP times).

There was a lot of chatter yesterday on the DC regional emailing list regarding the NE divs. One of the replies was the following:

"Dave Newman replied to my inquiry on this a couple of days ago and he said the date is not finalized yet but it looks like the NE Divisional Championships are going to be at the Seneca Army Depot in upstate NY and they are hoping for the last weekend in July."

NJ will be my first pro ever! I think the guys will be going to Oscoda, but I wouldn't run the Finale so no point to go there. I hear the Meadwolands is an amazing venue, and we might just do some NNJR events there for hahas. Really, the ST car is being built for Pros (following in Jason Rhoades' footsteps), since it will KILL the Civics on launch.

You could always come up and beg for a ride, and you could always race SM In your Toyota ;)

From what I heard from some of the people in that region, they lost that site? Maybe not? The Finger Lakes events are always fun because of the camping, but most of us had a problem with the SUPER long courses and the Day 2 13-cone slalom at the Tour last year...the SM car was running in the mid to high 70's, which means HS was...yeah you get the idea.

There is complications with the Pro Solo's. The owner of the D-Stock car does not want to do Pro's in it due to the stress from the launches on a new vehicle, so I'd have to find another co-drive for any Pro's. From mid-April (excluding Blythville weekend) to mid-Sept I literally have no free weekends due to circuit time and autocross. The NJ Pro falls on one of my time trial dates (I'll be at BeaveRun that weekend) and that's the only one I could have a solid "sure thing" co-drive as plenty of DC region folks are heading there. The Pro finale is a bit out of the question as I'm the senior network engineer for our team and I cant miss more than a week off at a time.

Blytheville is pretty much the only Pro I could logically do with my time constraints, but I have no co-drive for that (everyone I know that is going that would want a co already has one).

Next year, when the Corolla is properly prepped for FSP, my co-driver and I will definitely be at as my Pro's as we can get to.

Yea, Danny will be doing all the pro's he's attending in F125. Next season we'll both be in the FSP Corolla doing National and Pro Tours.

I have a drive open for the NJ tour in ES but unfortunately the NJ tour takes place during a time trial, so I'll be there instead. I'll definitely be sololive'ing though from the track.

I have another update for this to include the test, will probably update tomorrow. Long day today... Bought a tow vehicle but it didn't really go well...

I'm a Network Engineer functioning as a Network Management Systems Architect. I'm also a baby sitter as I'm our teams senior so I have to feed and burp (IE: stay late and fix the problems they create) the junior members of our team. I dont really like my job much as I'm surrounded by Lord of the Rings and Star Wars geeks all day, but it pays the bills and allows me certain liberties.

Episode 2: Testing

Image
Danny at the helm, me riding shotgun, observing and giving input.

On the morning of March 5th I was less than pleased to walk outside and realize that the projected 21 degree day (70ish for the SAE folks) was about five degrees short that morning. I grabbed a sweater and headed off to Bowie, Maryland for what would be a fairly frustrating day of testing.

Baysox Stadium (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=baysox+st ... 3&t=h&z=18), a site where I've experienced fuel cuts, shredded tires, poor times and whose planter islands have claimed a few out of control cars, is one of my least favorite lots that small regional clubs utilize. I normally avoid this place like the plague but Danny and I very much needed some testing time in the car in D-Stock trim before the Dixie National Tour. This lot is very dirty/gravely and combined with off camber sweepers, it makes for very erratic and inconsistent times, two things you'd like to avoid when trying to learn the in's and out's of a vehicle.

The event we were attending was not a normal autocross, it was an autocross school. I signed up as an instructor and Danny signed up as a student, so we arranged it that I would be his "instructor" and we spent the day switching off driving and observing. The school was split up into two sessions; the morning session was used to run slalom drills or sweeper drills and the afternoon session was spent running a full course and getting actual times. Since neither Danny nor I wanted to burn through our set of Hoosier A6's that day, we opted to run on street tires in the morning and then going to r-compounds in the afternoon.

Image
Crossing the WAYYYY too small timing gate. You'll see when you watch my video...

Anyone that knows me personally knows how I feel about street tires. I genuinely loathe driving on them and normally drive terribly due to frustration from their grip limits. I liken doing any form of performance driving on street tires to that of trying to play basketball in a pair of flip-flops. They're cumbersome, noisy and sloppy. This is not to say that I dont have respect for the folks in the Street Touring classes (the classes of Solo that are required 140 and above treadwear), it's just not something that fits my driving.

Utilizing Danny's phone, we ghetto timed each other through some of the early morning drills. On a 12 second slalom and back drill I was 3 seconds slower than Danny, things only got worse. Every braking zone was getting blown, I was snow plowing all over the place and the red mist surfaced. I'd never driven something so big before; compared to the Corolla this was like autocrossing a SUV. Lunchtime couldn't come soon enough and Danny used this time to calm me down and get my head back in the game. We had a quick bite to eat and then got to changing up to r-compounds. My day was about to have a drastic turnaround.

Image
Danny and I having a chat with the starter.

Since this was technically a "school" we were only given five runs per car, which meant that we had to split it. Since Danny is the car owner, I insisted he have three runs and I take two. It wasn't a lot for either of us, but it was all we were going to get so we had to make the best out of the situation.

Image
My first run, heading out of the starting box.

The car was totally transformed. From an undrivable oaf emerged a car that actually did transitions fairly well and a vehicle that didn't washout each time I took an off camber turn. Both Danny and I took one run by ourselves to see where we clocked in at. When all was said and done, Danny had a time of 42.2 and I had a time of 42.4. My early morning performance (or lack there of) was just another "Jim on street tires" moments and any fears about being too slow in the car disappeared.

My run, see how bad the stop gate was...

Danny's 2nd run

Afternoon performance aside, we had/have our doubts. We are not certain the car can be on pace Nationally as we dont have a lot of experience with the car and it's not an overdog in the least for D-Stock (the 2011 WRX also looks to be VERY formidable from early reports). Tire wear is also a massive concern of ours. The car can wheelspin on command out of the pocket and we experienced some very odd front tire wear. In the photo below you can see that we got wear in the middle of the tire next to the right side tread.

Image

Danny and I suffer from being too brave. We had a talk about this the other night and confirmed that this car does not fit our driving style. I know I always dive in too much and late brake when not needed, Brian Karwan (Street Modified FWD 2010 champion) had a good talk about this with me last year but old habits die hard. A driving style transformation is definitely required if we want to be on pace, I'm just not certain that this can happen by the time we park in grid at Dixie.

Dixie is this weekend, it takes place on both Saturday and Sunday. You will be able to track our times via the live-timing at http://sololive.scca.com/ (we will be under the D-Stock category). Hopefully you'll be rooting for us, we'll need it.

Upcoming:
-Dixie National Tour
