Why is there so much road noise inside the cabin? and... is it just me or is the engine kinda loud [the fact that you can hear it inside the cabin aswell]?

A lot of the noise is from the tires... esp. if you have the stock Continental 4x4 Contact's. It's especially pronounced on wet roads. Replacing the stock tires can make a huge difference. Check out our sponsor http://www.tirerack.com for tire reviews. Some of members have tried the Yokohama Avid TRZ with good results. My wife's car (Mazda Protege) has the Kumho Solus KH16. This is a nice 3 season tire (The Solus is not a particularly good winter tire from the reviews I've read) that is very quiet and smooth riding. It's available in sizes that fit the Rogue SL models: 225/60R17. I am seriously considering them for my Rogue as I do lots of highway driving. They are very competitive price wise and I have dedicated winter tires.

As for the engine, the Rogue has a large displacement 4 cyl motor. It's never going to be as smooth or as quiet as a V-6. Generally you don't hear the engine much when cruising, just during acceleration. I would say the Rogue's engine noise is about average for it's class. There are smoother, quieter motors out there... and there are others that are far worse.

I find the engine fairly noisy too, but like Phil said it's about average compared to others in the class with 4 cylinder that I drove. I've gradually came to the conclusion that it's not only the volume/decibals of the engine that are offensive, but it's the raspy tone.

In our Mazda 3, when you get the revs up high it gets kinda loud but it's a very pleasing sound, smooth not raspy like the Rogue. So as a result the loudness doesn't bother me, it actually sounds great I really love the sound of that car!! But the Rogue sounds quite a bit worse and offensive to the ears even when the volume is actually lower because the tone of the engine isn't very nice. It just doesn't have a nice smooth sound to it, and I think that is one reason people complain about it being too loud, in addition to the fact that it is a little on the loud side, particularly before it's warmed up. Just my opinion.

I love my new Toyo tires....they're so much quieter than continental. Also I guess Dynomat really works by insulating all 4 doors. No wonder it costs so much. I'll order more and will insulate the floor as well as the roof. I'm planning to drive this car for another 2-3 years at least and want to make it comfortable as much as possible.

I can't think anything other than insulating your car if you complain about the noise. Get DYNAMAT:

I only hear the engine on acceleration. I believe a lot of that has to do with the fact the Rogue has a timing chain instead of a timing belt. At cruising speed, the engine is quiet.

Moving from the factory Dunlops to Bridgestone Turanzas reduced road noise greatly.

B-Quiet is a good alternative to Dynomat. Similar product for tons less cost.
