So far I love it here in Panama but they do have a different sense of public safety. This manhole cover was missing for over a month - probably taken off by the construction crew just to the right of the picture. It is a busy street and because of the construction site the road tends to narrow right here. I have often wondered how many people hit this hole. I never saw any cones, warning signs or barricades.

Dude, you're in Houston, what kind of potholes do you have ? Up here in Canada, especially in Québec, potholes are a major issue. In spring, when it gets warmer and the ice trapped in the road melts, you should the size of those things ! MONSTROUS. Most of the time, they just fill the hole ASAP, but it's destroyed as fast. How many rims have I scraped because of that... And since the gouvernment is pretty ****ty to manage roads, it's not getting any better by the time. When you say that an overpass collapsed for no reason, that gives you an idea.

In Houston, we have a few issues. 1. Government workers that are responsible for fixing problems (enough said) 2. Heavy clay soils with ultra dry and ultra moist periods 3 A surface that's constantly shifting 4 Underground wells that are beginning to dry up. We get large cracks and potholes that pop up all year long. About once a quarter the news does another story on where these large potholes are. The city's getting better about fixing them more quickly.
