Say good bye to the crown victoria police car, here comes the Taurus Earlier today, Ford unveiled its next generation Police Interceptor (they'd rather you not call it a Taurus) at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway before a group of police agency fleet buyers. The event was webcast live, but you can now watch a replay as Ford president Mark Fields and vehicle line director Scott Tobin explain the process of developing the new cruiser and how it differs from a civilian Taurus.

The Dodge Charger has been stomping all over the Crown Vic and Impala in recent years during the annual Michigan State Police vehicle test, but that process could end this year when the new Taurus Police Interceptor hits the track. The 365-horsepower Ecoboost-powered Interceptor should be right up there with the Dodge and may well provide better fuel economy to boot.

Ford isn't talking price yet for the new cop cars, but it aims to make it competitive with the rest of the class, and a claimed 25-percent boost in fuel economy compared to Crown Vic should help ease the pain of transitioning.

I doubt we'll be seeing the Highway Patrol pulling any pit maneuvers with these.

Standard equipment is FWD, AWD is an option:

(from Jalopnik): There's also an optional AWD system for the members of the Fargo police department and any other P.D.'s with need of more-than-front-wheel drivetrain police cruisers.

Well, looks like they're doing everything they can to get rid of the maneuverability in the PCs! The impalas were a bad idea, this is also a bad idea. I'd take a crown vic PC over that if I was a cop.

One thing that has always baffled me: In all the years that Police cruisers have been around, with all of the advances in technology we've made, from paper notebooks to on board computers connected to a whole database, from cherry lights to bright leds, from nightsticks to tazers, and from mugshots to facial recognition and DNA printing........ WHY THE IS THE SPOT LIGHT STILL A HANDLE THATS STABBED THROUGH THE A PILLAR.

I would rather see a Challenger or Camaro as a PD car.

Sheridan WY uses base model Dodge Neons. I'm tempted to rob all of the banks and take off down the highway.

I dunno, I've driven a crown vic, not an impala though. From what I've read about the crown vic, its got pretty decent maneuverability for what it is (I didn't DRIVE the crown vic, I drove it to the grocery store). Seems like that would be better in a pursuit scenario.

Camaros or challengers wouldn't make it because they're not 4 door. Maybe a magnum would though, or a 300c, although I guess thats not as practical.

and LA is gonna be pissed.

you can't throw that car on a frame puller and have it back on the road as cheap once it takes a good thump in the line of duty

Column shifter is a must in an interceptor. I don't want one anywhere near any car I drive, though, unless it's a truck.

No, it shouldn't.And no, it won't.

Let me help give this scenario some perspective. The Taurus is a FWD or AWD sedan with a sideways aluminum turbo V6.The Charger is a RWD or AWD sedan with a longitudinal cast iron V8.The Taurus weighs 4000lb in FWD form (holy s***!) and 4400lb (@#$%!) in AWD SHO form. FORTY FOUR HUNDRED REALITY-DEFYING POUNDS!The Charger, iron block and longitudinal drivetrain and all, weighs 4000lb in RWD form or 4200lb in AWD form. It also makes 40 more ft-lb in 5.7 form and 70 more ft-lb in 6.1 form. So it's lighter and more powerful AND has a superior drivetrain layout. The Taurus is "right up there" with the Charger in the same way a Maybach is right up there with a Viper.

I'm still stuck on the fact that the Taurus weighs 4400 effing lbs. (!!!) Even the body-on-frame Crown Vic doesn't weight that much!!!! And Ford thinks that slapping turbos on a V6 and putting it in this thing is going to IMPROVE fuel economy over the CV?! Gimme some of whatever they're drinking, please.

And ecoboost can suck my balls. Put the two missing cylinders back so at least the crummy fuel economy the SHO has demonstrated in the real world can be justified by extra power. Coyote 5.0. End of debate. GM fits a V8 in the Impala and it's not nearly as wide as the Nimitz class Taurus.

Impala has been FWD for a decade.

Nala, you're a retard. I'll try to explain this so you understand. With all the equipment a cop has to wear and the MDAC, radio, and lights/siren controller they are ungodly tight on the inside. The point of a squad car is to get to a call and if need be run out of the car, not try to get out of the car and then run. The interior in the Impala is way to small for anyone except tiny guys and medium build girls. Stuffing a guy who's over 5'8" and weighs more than 160 lbs with a vest, equipment belt, and radio into a sardine can of an interior is not exactly good when it comes to getting in and out in a hurry.
