Column shifter is a must in an interceptor. I don't want one anywhere near any car I drive, though, unless it's a truck.

No, it shouldn't.And no, it won't.
Let me help give this scenario some perspective. The Taurus is a FWD or AWD sedan with a sideways aluminum turbo V6.The Charger is a RWD or AWD sedan with a longitudinal cast iron V8.The Taurus weighs 4000lb in FWD form (holy s***!) and 4400lb (@#$%!) in AWD SHO form. FORTY FOUR HUNDRED REALITY-DEFYING POUNDS!The Charger, iron block and longitudinal drivetrain and all, weighs 4000lb in RWD form or 4200lb in AWD form. It also makes 40 more ft-lb in 5.7 form and 70 more ft-lb in 6.1 form. So it's lighter and more powerful AND has a superior drivetrain layout. The Taurus is "right up there" with the Charger in the same way a Maybach is right up there with a Viper.
I'm still stuck on the fact that the Taurus weighs 4400 effing lbs. (!!!) Even the body-on-frame Crown Vic doesn't weight that much!!!! And Ford thinks that slapping turbos on a V6 and putting it in this thing is going to IMPROVE fuel economy over the CV?! Gimme some of whatever they're drinking, please.
And ecoboost can suck my balls. Put the two missing cylinders back so at least the crummy fuel economy the SHO has demonstrated in the real world can be justified by extra power. Coyote 5.0. End of debate. GM fits a V8 in the Impala and it's not nearly as wide as the Nimitz class Taurus.

Impala has been FWD for a decade.
