So ive decided to do rings, because, the crank case pressure is super high, and i have many reasons to why i need rings, hopefully the ring lands are fine, and if they are fine, then i will just put new rings and rod/main bearings in. also while getting the block tanked, honed, decked, and checked, and getting the crank turned.

but what all brands are out there for the CA? I am pretty set on ACL rod/main bearings, but not sure on rings. any suggestions?

Clevite 77 are very good stuff, as are the Federal Mogul race bearings. Both available at Advance or Auto Zone for under $70 for the whole set (main and rod). I went with total seal chrome rings from Advance, because they were my only option at the time. Very fancy rings though, just make sure you do the proper precautions for running chrome rings. The rings cost me $96.

Clevite 77's are awesome. My engine builder swears by them. As far as rings go, I've heard bad things about gapless rings, but I have no first hand experience. I've always just used Nissan rings and have had great luck with them. Make sure whatever ring you get you file fit them.

your running a chrome upper ring also Tim?

that makes two of us.....high five. Strongest ring available, also the hardest to properly seat.

OP, if your not planning on a metal HG, why deck the block? If you havent spun any bearings, why turn the crank? And lastly, there are numbers on your crank and block than can be added together in order to obtain factory grade bearings and in turn factory spec clearances.

Nissan took the time to stamp the numbers, and make like 5 different grade std size bearings. Take this into consideration when pricing nissan bearings.

well first off, i already have a cometic HG with arp studs.

and im not going to pull rods, and pistons and use the same bearings that were in it, its called preventative maint. i dont want to have the motor aprt again, why not do all new bearings, with freah surfaces and cleaned/honed/decked block.

PLEASE read my sig at the top before asking what is done, not stock turbo, its called building a motor to be reliable and stable.

can diy file fit rings if you know what your doing. Gapless rings are generally used on high hp race cars, aka bbc sbc bbf sbf applications. ive got no experience with them on a turbo motor so i cant say whether or not they would work well.

I do know total seal is one of the best products out there, and file fit rings is the best way to go for any application imo.

building a motor to be reliable and stable eh?

so ARP's, MHG, and stock pistons.

of those 3 listed above, the pistons are the weak link in the equation.

no im not being a d*ck, this is how I converse.

well i couldnt find the file fit ones.

and the pistons may be replaced, but then the rods are kind of the weak point, if i go with wiseco's and stock rods, would the rods handle a good amount?

yea the rods can handle a good amount, but here's the thing.

If your stock pistons are in good shape, and you don't plan on ruthlessly thrashing this motor (i.e prolonged limiter at track days 20psi) just get some new OEM nissan piston rings, gap them, and call it good.

what do you plan on doing with the car?

how much boost are you planning on?

I use total seal tnt ring set, gapless second ring...

The ring still has a gap, but it has a rail that follows the contour through the gap..

i plan to run about 18 or so, and there will be much of the limiter envolved, since first gear is already pointless, its getting water-air I/C and stickies in the spring, its got a large turbo and will have a tune for pump and race.

so im thinking i should go with aftermarket good rings and possibly pistons if i have to have them once i pull it apart..?

your engine is also a one-off boost monster that will prolly make around 500whp meminto.

your stock pistons could handle 18 psi no problem.....safe afr/timing is critical obviously.

what do you plan to use for engine management?

Gapless Rings are part No. T1224. Just found it on the Total Seal web site. 84-89 CA18DE/ET Turbo.

Greg, I seated the crap out of that top ring. Just takes a little 8200rpm finesse.

So? set that limiter at 8200, fire up the car, point it down the street and blast it though 4th, winding it out under WOT every time. They will seat like a champ.

Greg, I am seeing upwards of 165psi in each cylinder. Last I checked (my compression tester crapped out this recent time I tried to check it) I think it was pretty dead even 165 across the board.

when i blew my head gasket, i had 50,75,50,40

i thought thats pretty low compression, so i threw more boost at it.*
