Ringing noise...

Ok, so I have a 91 240, with a 200k engine. There is a ringing sound that starts when the engine is forced to do harder work. In other words when I step on the gas and try to accelerate harder. I cant tell at what RPM the noise starts and ends at cause I have no tach, but its a horrid noise. Any ideas?

could it be a timing chain issue?, I noticed it only acts up when the engine is forced to do more work, for instance when I just start accelerating in a higher gear, then towards the middle of the gear it settles down and towards the higher rpms starts up again. It also only happens after the engine warms up....
