I am looking for Johnny Rocket, no email listed, or NORCAL, anyone that has done a gear swap. I want to change out my ring/pinon to 4.36 or so, BUT I want to keep my stock carrier. I don't want to lose my ABS.

I have been reading everything I can find on pinon gears from Nissan and can't decipher whether or not there is a longer pinon for the R200V w/ ABS. ABS port right behind companion flange. Does anyone know? I haven't found anything to say they're longer, but a few indications that there all the same length.

If they're all the same length, can I order a ring/gear set... Say 4.36's out of an Xterra or whatever, provided it's 200mm???

Any help would be appreciated...
John Whitmire

Pretty sure Johnny Rocket sold his Q. He was full of empty promises anyways.

And I am also fairly sure 1990-2001 Q45s all have the same length pinion. No matter if they have Traction Control (Two speed sensors) or not.

How will your ABS work with a different gear ratio than OEM?

Good question... No answer. I've asked most of the techs at my local Infiniti dealer about changing the gears, but none of them had any clues about anything. None asked me that question. Haven't seen anything about it in any forum. I guess... I would hope the ABS computer would compensate.

So, do you think pinons from all or most R200's, R200V's are the same length? Maybe the companion flange is deeper than say on a Z32?

Not a good idea. Just can't even think of a reason why.

What is with you? You always have to throw a turd in the punchbowl... Are you an old man or just jealous?

Maxnix; Just one time... Just one f*** time I'd like to see you ENCOURAGE ANYONE attempting a mod on their Q. You sound like a complete PUSS! I'm around 500hp and like to race my Q; don't like it...Too bad. The gearing would help me launch better... DUH! I just had 4.08's in the car and it was a night and day difference.

If you; Just can't even think of a reason why... Than you sir are a dumbass know-it-all! If you've got nothing good to say... Keep it to yourself douchebag! Do you really own a Q, or is it a YUGO!

My Q has a 4.? Rearend. Makes for awesome acceleration, but high rpm cruising on the highway.

You will lose ABS. Don't think there is any way around that.

Don't care about highway driving, 99+% of my driving is city... Is your rear diff the same as the one I explained above. No TCS, but has the single ABS port behind the companion flange?

Talked to a mechanic buddy of mine who said he thinks I will lose the ABS unless I reprogram the ABS computer to reflect the gear change... Pinon rotations per mile or something... Thanks!

Not sure how much difference in speed between front and rear wheels it takes to get the ABS Control Unit to stop working. If I had to guess I would say 10% difference and that sounds like a lot.

Why not mess with the torque converter? Not sure if that would cause the rear wheels to spin faster than the front though.

Or you could do what I am planing and make it all wheel drive. ABS will work and if you had TCS it would work even better. :)

No TCS... That's just what I need; All wheel drive, because I haven't thrown enough money into this car. LOL God bless you for having the balls to try it; way too in-depth for my novice mechanic abilities.

Here's one for you to ponder... If the rear ABS is not connected, do you still have ABS on the front wheels? My guess would be no, but stranger things have been known to happen.

If the rear sensor is not connected you will have a trouble code stored in the ABS module. Once that happens, the ABS system will be disabled until the issue is fixed. I don't have an answer for whether it would still work or not. I tend to think it might since the rear wheel sensor is mount at the front of the pinion, prior to the gear change. But I can't say 100%.

Thanks, guess I'll figure it out when I cross that bridge... Another tech I know was telling me about some kind of "box" that takes the 2 sensor readings off the back of say the Z32, converts it to a single signal or something; have you ever heard of that? Wish I could remember what he called it...

Why are you so attached to keeping ABS? I've never ran into a situation where I was upset about not having it, but there have been plenty of times I was happy to have the extra acceleration.

PS, Your speedo will read higher also.

Okay... I know about the speedo, but remember; I'm a novice mechanic with the Q. It's not like my old Chevelle or Challenger.

Extra acceleration? You mean from the loss of ABS? The only reason I like ABS so much down here is because the oldies, snowbirds, will pull out right in front of you at least a couple times a week, so it's nice to have a controlled stop, instead of skidding into them. :ohno:

Couldn't get 4.36's, but I did get a nice set of 4.11's out of Australia. Installed this weekend, running well. Ordered a 4.11 pinon speedo from Nissan, suppose to be here next week. PS: My ABS is back online! No warning lights on dash!

Got the 4.11's in and I now have my ABS back... No light on the dash... LOVE IT! I also got my car dyno'd, there is a post with numbers and graph. Sorry, I didn't realize I already told you...

Where did you get the 4.11 speedo sensor. I may try that in my car.

Ordered it from Concept Z, online. Checked my speed with my Garmin and checks out perfect.

Also, you will need to tell them it's for an automatic. The manual version won't work.

The only thing that sucked was waiting for the boat to get them here, like 6 weeks. The company is Wholesale Car Parts Australia; EBAY ID: WCPAUS. These guys are real nice and INEXPENSIVE; about $360, including the shipping. I'll be using them again as needed. Just have to remember not all their parts will work, right-hand drive...
