what would be the advantage of going to a different gearing like 4.083, 4.364, or 4.636? What is the stock gear set at for a 1998? Now I know if you change up the gearing it changes up how soon you will hit red line in reference to the mph, but i was wondering if it would be a big difference. just looking to make my car a more spirited ride and throw the gears more often but not make my 70 mph cruising rpm's 5,000 ya know

this has nothing to do with the KA so it should be in the 240sx main forum. that's probably why you haven't gotten any response. anyway...

it depends on which one you put on. the 4.36 gears will make some difference, but of course the 4.64 is a bigger difference. stock is 4.083 for all 240s and z32 NAs, among others. for spirited street driving, i would go with the 4.36, the 4.64 will be too short. if it's your first mod, or you just have bolt ons, i wouldn't bother with it, but that's just me. if you are looking for an LSD anyway, some of the JDM s-chassis had 4.36 gears, you could kill two birds with one stone and it would be easier to boot.

70 mph stock - 300070 mph 4.36 - 322070 mph 4.64 - 3450

shorter gearing (higher numerically) will give you faster acceleration but you have to shift more and the revs are higher at cruising speed. also decreased gas mileage.

longer gearing (lower numerically) makes acceleration slower, but you get better gas mileage and can handle big power better because you don't have to shift as fast and you have a higher top speed. you are also less likely to roast the tires with lots of power.

on a side note, how's Austin? i'll be down there for a weekend once i get back in the states.

i should be back some time in september. at least here it's hot and dry.

the main 240sx forum or the 240sx tech sections would both be a better plance than this. it's all the same people anyway.
