Hi Spence,
The bigger the wheels, the bigger the price – wheels AND tires. Having said that, I put 16x7.5 on the ’92 years ago and regretted it almost ever since – too small with too few tire choices these days. I think 17’s and 18’s are the only sensible diameters in 7.5” – 9” widths with 40mm offset. The OEM 15” wheels were 45mm offset. A taller than stock tire will rub the suspension, making 40mm offset the best choice.
With 19’s & 20’s I think the look is “awkward”, but worse, to maintain the correct tire diameter (26” +/- ~.5”) you have to go to a 30-35 aspect ratio. With sidewalls that short you’ll be almost guaranteed to ruin your wheels in even a medium size pothole. Forget taking the Oak St. Bridge in winter.
Also, critically, make sure to have at least a 95V load index.
So, 17 x 7.5-9 – 40mm offset with 245/45x17, 17 x 8.5-9 – 40mm offset with 255/45x17.
Or, 18 x 7.5-9 – 40mm offset with 245/45x18, 18 x 8.5-9 – 40mm offset with 255/40x18.
I have 255/40x18 on 18x8 – 40mm offset on the ’95 – perfect fit on the car, but 8.5” rim width would be better.
If you’re interested, I have 3 18x7.5 – 40mm offset wheels from a 2003-2004 M45-Q45 in new condition. You can get a 4th on eBay.
