so I recently purchased some used 16 inch rims from craigslist for 100 bucks. They arent in the best condition, but thankfully they have no major issues and still hold air. I've decided to make these my DIY project rims. It gives my dad and I something to do together (since I've moved out we dont do much together) plus I think its the cheapest way of getting some rims at the moment.

So....here's what they have:

1. DIRTY as HELL2. 2/4 rims have pretty good curb rash all the way around the rim, the other two have minor amounts3. tires are done. two have a good amount of wires hanging out.4. all four have center caps, but they are pretty faded5. need balancing weights6. need tuner lug nuts7. Need a paint job (currently a faded silver, but will be gloss black)

Here's what I've done so far:

1. scrubbed and power washed. They were actually brighter than I thought. they appear to have been painted before2. sanded metal spurs off due to curb rash.

next I will be using some JB-weld to fill in the curb rash. Sand that down, and get the paint on. I'm thinking about 1 spray can of paint and one of wheel clear for each rim. cost will roughly be $65

I will then be getting some tires. I'm leaning towards used ones. These are project rims btw and I'm not looking to spend too much. Found a place in sacramento that carry some that'll fit for $20 mounted/balanced each. Cost will roughly be $80

found some tuner lug nuts that will fit. They will be red. $40

Approximate total cost will be $285 give or take some for taxes and maybe some other costs. Lets maybe say it'll be a $325 project. I personally feel that this is a reasonable price for a project that I will be proud of having completed.

I am expecting to get some negative feedback from some folks. But I'm just a college student with some time to kill. plus I guess the father/son time is an added bonus.

sounds like the project I just got my self in to. Got a set of 17s of craigslist for a 100 bucks. I tried to use some graphite color wheel paint but it did'nt turn out that great. I may look into getting them powdercoated or get some help with the paint

Unfortunately, I forgot to take pics of the damage, but I'll make sure to take. Some of the weld on them and from now on. Update though: the jb-weld came out great. It is ready for sanding on Monday. I will be picking up the paint today. I'm thinking gloss black....but a satin black may look good too. Dunno, I'll see what they have and decide from there

Definitely looking to see some pics. If the ad on craig's list had pics then download those and use them as the before and post them with the after pics after you've completed your project. Good luck

update: JB-weld was sanded off...came out great....all thats left of the curb rash is just traces. You can see where the scratch happened, but it's been filled in and is flush to the rim.

PRIMER IS ON!! almost complete. pics will be up soon. promise

btw: also picked up the lug nuts

So. I haven't updated in a while and there has been some turn of events. I've been saving up some cash to get some new tires. My Dad said if I saved half of the amount, he'd pay for the other half. So yesterday I had the half so we went out looking for some tires. We ended up at this new locally owned tire place and began looking around. Long story short...we ended up buying a rim and tire package for $500. I got some Katana ZR5, 5 spoke, 17inch rims with some low profile tires that I don't recall the brand. They are flat black with a red lip. Kinda what I was going for minus the red lip.

Anywho, I'll still post pics of the project, it's pretty much complete minus tires. As of today however, they are up for sale. I'll be posting them on craigslist soon. Thanks to all who've been following. I'll have pics up real soon, I promise
