rim and tire size for snow tires

I have a 2006 Murano and will be going from Phoenix, Az to Canton, Ohio right after xmas. After doing some searching it looks like the recommendation is to go down to a smaller size. I currently have 18" wheels.. Can anyone say what their experience has been with 16" wheels?? And if you downsized what size did you got to??
