How do you guys figure out what fits on a 17 * 7.5 inch rim?

Trial and Error? I couldn't find it in the faq. And on tirerack.com, If i have a 17 *7.5 rim, Do I have to know the tire size i want. Or can I input that wheel size somewhere and it will spit back some tires?

255 mm width is about as wide as you can go (and coincidentally, as wide as you'll find).

For a 240? 245/45/17's would be sweet on that size rim.

but, how do you(anyone) know that a 245 will fit before I put it on. Just people trying on tires and reporting back? Do you get my question, i just used 7.5 as an example

thanks

If you go on tire websites, they have the recommended wheel widths for that specific tire. However, some go bigger or smaller than the recommendation.

If we knew what make, model, and year the car was it would be much easier to help with this question. Also what wheel setup you are looking at would be good since the wheel offset will determine where that tire ends up inside the wheel well:D

About trial & error, basically yes. Some of us get our hands dirty and actually are the workers in the tires stores. This gives us first hand knowledge of what fits. It also introduces us to the majority of people who do not know the word maintenance, and couldn't find the valve stem to check tire pressure if a hitman was holding a gun to their head:rant...whew...

Ok, so sidewall height is critical when talking about fitment. Most tire websites have taken the guesswork out of it for us by listing tire specs, along with recommended wheel width for a given size. If you're looking for a <proper> fitment, you'll find the suggested rim width for a given size on a website. If you're looking to see what'll squeeze on a rim, that is the trial & error part.

So, to ask if a 245 will fit is tricky, unless we know the other dimensions of the tire, and application so we can guesstimate what tire size will keep us close to OEM overall diameter(very critical).

I am just asking, because I was wondering if fitting tires to wheels/cars is just guess work or if there is some special equation etc. I don't have a special wheel in mind, just wanting to know what wheel fits what tire. SmithSR pretty much answered my question

thanks
