Ok, I noticed that I have been slowly losing fluid from my brand new braking system ...well it is a year old now (Brembo blanks, Axxis MM pads, Goodridge SS lines, Motul fluid). So I get nosy and take a look inside my wheels. The right rear one is full of brake fluid sludge. F'ing great. I don't have air tools, so rebuilding the caliper myself would be a PITA (getting out the piston, cleaning it up, etc) Last time I had someone else do my brakes (on my old truck) it was $95 per set of calipers to be rebuilt. So, do I just drop my car off and fork over the $100, or is it really easy to rebuild a caliper? I have pretty advanced mechanics skills, so if it can be done easily at home, give me a few pointers. Now I know why I have been getting the odd shimmy from the rear when I am braking down from higher speeds lol.

I love cars....something is always screwing up!

Check out the price on a remanufactured caliper from autozone or somewhere similar. If you can get one for cheap, replacement isn't hard, and with speed bleeders or a friend, bleeding the system isn't hard either.Or you could always look into a z32 rear setup. I was never happy with my stock rear calipers, seemed like they always needed adjustment or something. Maybe they were seized, who knows, but I definitly like the z32 drum e-brake over the integrated ebrake on the stock caliper. Plus the z32 rear calipers should be a bit easier to rebuild since they don't have any ebrake parts complicating the caliper construction should you have to service it in the future.

Well, caliper rebuild kits are like $10 from Nissan. Calipers themselves are usually like $80-$100, so that is goofy. And I have no desire or need to replace the rear with Z brakes, as I have an S13, and that is a lot of parts to acquire. But thanks for the response!

I am not afraid of some work. I redid my brakes myself, so I am well versed in S13 brake work, but I just was wondering if anyone has rebuilt a caliper them selves. IIRC, you need the air tools to force the pot out and to clean the caliper body up. The seals all pop in as I usnderstand...

Ok, took your advice and started looking at caliper cost. I have never taken in some thing for a "core exchange" before, so explain this to me:

Autozone has the caliper for $65, with a "Core Value" of $60. Does that mean I can take in my caliper, get $60 for it, pay Autozone $5, and walk out with a brand new caliper? My pads and lines are still good, so all that needs replacing is the caliper.

I think that means if you do not have the cores with you, then each caliper cost 125.00 where if you exchange the cores at the same time, the calipers are 65.00.Best bet would be to call the store and ask though.
