if 20" is already more then the diameter of the current wheel/tire combo then yes. If not you'll need a tire with a sidewall equivalent to a rubber band to at least keep your speedometer accurate. I found with 19's tire size (with 8" wheel) is 245/35-19!

The shocks only have a little less than 6.7" of total movement, ideally you want the ride height to be such that at the normal load you are exactly in the middle 3.35" compressed.

This is difficult since the total spring constant of a Q is 536 per inch of compression.....536 pounds at the center of gravity will drop the car 1.0 inch.............2 passengers and something in the trunk................the difference between a full and empty tank changes the rear ride height by 0.56" and thus the shock positioning! Why the rears wear sooner than the front, the load varies more as front seat occupation is near the center of gravity and is divided by all 4 wheels [somewhat equally]

Thats the problem with lowering, the shock looses an inch in compression but gains an inch in rebound [expansion] thus the stiffer spring stores more energy allowing the body to go up an extra inch so the rebound wears much faster than the compression stiffness of the shock.

I seems to me that ego or dates could be persuaded for a lot less than the $3,000 decent wheels and 20" tires would cost plus the reoccurring annual expense $1000 [or more if would were to bend a single whell] added to the $2500 normal maintenance and repair of the 93Q.

Heck, 15" tires on 93 rims cost me around $600-$700 per year to keep vibration free and to met oem new stopping distance.

My experience with and cost associated with STOCK suspension component replacement warn against adding much unsprung weight.........bearings, kingpins, suspension members, shocks.

I have 17's on and they are plenty, wouldn't want to go any bigger.

And it is VERY expensive to buy wheels that are that large and still decent enough qulaity to not bend easily.

I dont think it can be done for less than $500 per wheeel if then.Almost all aftermarket wheels arwe too low quality even in 17's.

Its a LOT harder (and more expensive) to make a good wheel in 20 than in 17.

Fred...:)

Sage words from the masters.

Leave the "bling-bling" to the idiots on MTV - Nothing cool about a poorly-maintained car with more $$ in the rims/tires than the cost of the car.

Yow!

Stock 15" is small for the Q, and 15" tires are getting weaker and weaker. (The Q is heavy!) 16-17" is optimal for the car -- it avoids the increase in unsprung weight. Not sure what "unsprung weight" is? (I would have been puzzled at your age.) There are plenty of references/books around to read about it, notably some titles published by Robert Bentley (who I used to edit for). Unsprung weight is a bad thing for handling and ride quality. Amazing how much money people pay to have MORE of it.

So the question is -- are you after the bing-bing or do you want a car that handles/performs like few others??

It would make a bigger impression to do preventative maintenance and needed repairs so you can drive the car to school day after day. Stock wheels can look quite good if they're cleaned properly.

The impression 20" wheels gives is more 'desperate for attention' than 'cool guy.'

Plus most tires in those sizes are only high performance summer tires which will be very dangerous in cold, wet weather. Not sure the car will look that impressive in a ditch, or banged up from running into other cars.

Being well spoken and written will impress many outside of your immediate peer group.

There are very few slang slinging slackers in control of anything in the real world. Hollywood is most definitely not real life.

Brian's right - Those of us who swing the big stick are typically balding, myopic and not-so-stylishly dressed.

However, we are all well-spoken, well-read, and can think on the fly... And that's something no automotive accessory can replace.

Yeah, see, I HATE PEOPLE THAT THE FIRST THING THEY THINK IS TO "ROLL ON 20s". No mercy here, who on this board can forgive this kid for the expenses he is about to wreak on himself with these idiot wheels, when for the same money one of us could be going turbo like we so much want? I'd rather be on my stock steelies and have that three grand or more for my turbo kit and impress that way. Stupid kids................

The great part is seeing a clapped-out early 90's Lexus or Acura (or an old Q) with 20's... The damn thing runs like crap and has 250K on it, but it's "rollin' on dubs". :rolleyes Whatever.

I like to race 'em. Then I invite 'em to NICO.

I'm certainly impressed that you would take a car already too heavy for it's stock brakes and add another 100hp to the equation!

Whoa! Lots of pessimistic, middle-aged opinions floatin' around here. :D

Woodmister, "overkill" is a vast understatement in describing 20's on a Q. Forget about ride comfort, you'll lose your kidneys and the rest of your major organs everytime you encounter a speedbump. The cost of 20" rims is very expensive, at least a couple thousand for a barely decent set and an arm and a leg for adequate tires.

It's like all the girls say, size doesn't matter, it's all about style. :D Slick rims will look good regardless if they're 16's or 18's. First things first though, make sure your Q is in tiptop shape before you do any extraneous mods. I'm doing a little research on some factory 18x9.5 Cobra wheels. I'll be addressing the stock brakes at the same time.

BTW, welcome to the club!

Wood - Look for my Q in the Member's Rides section.

16" factory alloys (chromed) with 245/50/16's. All the girlies at the high school dig it. (Or maybe it's me.... Nope - It's definitely the car.):D

Haha, this thread keeps cracking me up as I read down it. It is definitly true about the hype about big "rims" is just garbage. I like to have some nice wheels on my car but I'm not going to kill my performance just to have the look of a rapper.
