Humm.. I think I made it obvious that I was talking about RICERS. If you're getting performance stuff and not just rice looks stuff you're obviously not a ricer. I never said if you have an auto you're a ricer. I drove around a Auto nissan truck for 2 years, I'm not a ricer, and I was not then. You must be feeling rice guilty? Do you have that neon light up exahaust tip I see at pep boys? I know you do!!! J/k it's all good man.. If you're not a ricer your not a ricer. Get used to the name, there are plenty people who will call all of us ricers just because we have imports. No biggie..

Almost no ablility to launch (powerbraking sux in a car without tons of low end and you all know it). There is NO way you'd match the 1/4 mi times of somone with Manual in the same auto car. Look at even the Corvette, the Standard MANUAL C5 is rated at 13.2, the auto 13.8. At least in STOCK form. Auto is slower. Eventually it'll be faster, but when cars are stock, or close to stock that's not the case.

You're forgetting one VERY important point (aside from the fact that I've been racing longer than most of you've been driving...).

Those times you're reading are achieved with professional testers, and are the BEST time a professional driver could get in that car.

Having made an annual pilgrimage to Bondurant since before college, I can tell you that VERY FEW people can drive a manual to its max potential - Therefore, the modern automatic will typically be an almost even match. There may be a SLIGHT advantage in an older 240 with a VERY skilled drivr but that's just as likely to be due to the weight differences between the two cars as it is the drivetrain power loss...

I spent some time recently thrashing a G35 sedan (auto) and was consistently DEAD-EVEN with an identical car (manual) each time we raced (approx 0-90, similar to what you'd see in the 1320).

BTW - Powerbraking is unnecessary.

My challenge stands.

Maybe everyone is wrong with this Auto to manual transmission swap? Auto is where it's at. I'm gonna do a Manual to Auto swap. I think I'll get a decent performance gain.

Powerbraking is unnecessary? What's the stall speed on a stock 240 transmission? 1,500rpm? I don't know about you guys, but I do NOT achieve my best 60fts and 1/4 mile times launching MY car at 1,500rpm.

Okay, let's see auto 240 vs. manual 240, the manual guy will launch it at 3,000rpm maybe higher if he's got good tires and LSD. The auto guy will just floor it and it'll launch at 1,500rpm (no power down there). Auto guy need NOT worry about traction, since a 1,500rpm is far from a nice power area with a KA. Manual guy will do a Nice powershift into 2nd gear and chirp it, auto guy's will smoothly and slowly shift into second, no chirps will occur. Why am I going through this... Think what you want, get a auto 240SX with Apex Dual N1 and come race me. Trust me you'll be seeing some hazards.

David.

well you ARE only running a 15.9....that dosent seem to say much for your driving ability. i've heard much better times coming from completely stock cars before...

On yeah.. Let's get all personal. Aren't we childish? Or do we just have no debate skills?

If it makes you feel any better that 15.9 was with 17mph headwinds, it was 65 degrees out, AND it was at 2,700ft (LACR). What difference does it make? Let's hear what you have and what you run to see if I feel it's up to par with my 'standards' of what I feel you should run.

A 'time' is only relative to where you are running. In what I’m saying 'auto vs manual' I’m assuming both cars are running in the same conditions. Any racer knows that there are many variables that will drastically affect a race. Wind, temp, altitude, just to name a few.

Why can't we keep the personal attacks out of this? I hate when people are having a nice debate and some sucker who obviously has no debate skills just starts making these pointless attacks. Yes, POINTLESS.

Even if I had a SR20DET with 400hp and I only ran 15.9 what would that prove? That I'm a bad driver? That if it was auto it would be in the 12s? It would prove NOTHING because you didn’t see the race. You don't know if I launched it at redline, you don't know if there was 50mph winds, you don't know if it was 20 degrees out, you don't know if I missed 3rd and coasted the rest of the way, you know NOTHING about the run. So drawing any conclusion about my driving ability without knowing the exact variables of the situation is just stupid. We're totally talking about hypothetical situations.

Yes, I was sarcastic in my previous post, but did you see me attacking AZhitman personally? I'm attacking his opinion that autos and manuals will have little or not performance difference. It's a difference of opinion, that's it. And he seems mature enough to keep it at that. Too bad you aren't.

240SXer - Thanks for keeping it "above board". I suppose I'd emphasize the two critical points of my post.

1) MODERN car - No offense, but doesn't the 240 have a "truck" motor? The way you described the shifting of an auto trans 240 leads me to believe that if you drove/raced a G35, an SLK, an M5, a Cobra or any other MODERN performance car with an autotrans, you might think otherwise. Perhaps you're right about the 240 scenario, as I was basing my statements (including the powerbraking comment) on the aforementioned vehicles (and my extensive track time on Roush-prepped Cobras)...

2) Driver skills - You have obviously learned to get the MOST out of your 240. However, most have NOT. A poorly driven manual can COST the racer precious tenths. And most I've raced have been just that.

p.s. I'll be glad to run you heads-up with my Q...:D

I do so have a car dammit. Just because it's a chick's car doesn't mean sheot. Hehe...it's been on a road course...flogged...

Nope. You are right on track. BTW, the GP is an auto and it's hung with LT1-powered F-bodies for about 100 feet or so. That was with my wife driving. I was following in my '72 Camaro. When the 3800 ran out of steam, the LT1 was decimated by the 406 SBC in said Camaro, which was sold for a 240 btw. And $5k cash.

And why do you have to be punking me out AZ? :D

Okay.. Maybe if other cars are more equal with the auto vs. manual. The only auto 'performance' car I've ever driven was a 2001 Camaro Z28, which acutally didnt seem much slower than than the manual. But I still think that with 99% of the cars a manual would win over an auto. At least stock. Modded it's another story.

lol. Sky knows how old AZ is. and she' ain't telling. :D

i think another key thing, which may be a frivolous thing to some. is the fun of 5spd. i like being in control of my car. i like the feel of running through the gears, and downshifting before a turn. i don't drag race though, so i'm not interested in 1/4 times. just FTD! WOOT!

so when i see a *hideously altered* (read:rice) car w/ an automatic i can only shake my head.

and rwd/automatic don't mix with snow as s14pimpin' says. and neither do 4cyl/automatics. just my opinion.

i simply stated, you dont appear to be the seasoned veteran in the racing field that AZhitman appears to be. personal attack? no, simply an outside observation...

uhh..yeah usually when you launch at redline, then miss third gear and coast the rest of the quarter mile that counts you IN as a pretty bad driver...

just another observation that leads me to believe that you're full of ****...

:rolleyes yeah i guess you'll probably try and come back at me with a, "no I have a bigger pen15!" argument now...so i'll forewarn you...shut up, you're just gonna look like more of an idiot.

If you have a 240 and you can only run 15.9 at 2,700 with 17mph headwinds you are not a seasoned racing vet. Correct? I'd assume it would be in the 12s? Let's ask our local expert mainevent212. mainevent212, what should I have to run to be a "seasoned racing vet?" Why don't you be a smart guy and look up a Sea Level time for that 15.9. Don't try to change around what you said. It was a 1 line post. If you really meant all that other bull you would have said it I recon. Why can't we all just get along? The main argument was with me and AZ yet you didnt see him and I start doing this...

I'm gonna look like an idiot? I doubt that, plus, I don't really care. Maybe being worried about what some dude say bad about you will ruin your day, but not mine. If I have an opinon i'm gonna say it, even if it makes me look like an idiot.

My outside observation of you is your just some troll who just posts a 1 liner with no usefull content just to try to fuel the flames. Or, or maybe my driving skills would matter? If you'd remember right or maybe you didnt even read it. I said a auto car is PHYSICALLY slower than a manual. When you look at those things you have to assume certian things or else it's impossible to compare the two. And one of those assumptions is the drivers are both good. If you're saying you could beat a Corvette with your civic just because the corvette does not know what he's doing, does that mean a Civic is faster than a corvette?

OUCH... sounds like catastrophe here, lolol, i knew that this thread was gonna go waay off topic before i even read it, 4 pages on why ricers have auto's...i dont think so, most of the longest threads are arguments... anyways...

most ricers have autos because they are complete idiots, you guys should see some of the genious minds at my school, ALL of the rice cars at my school are auto, its prob because of the movies and the lack of driving skill to drive a 5 speed... in my case i have a 95 s14 AUTO, it was my aunts car and i was not gonna turn it down, a base model s14 with 46k, clean interior(leather), black inside and out, well kept and bought for CHEAP. My first mod to this car will be the 5 speed ( once the money shows up), and i will mod my car accordingly from there...i have matured and hopefully the ricer idiots will snap out of it soon :)

BTW, if you're running high 15's with minimal mods, you're doing well, regardless of your skills. That's a faster 240 than most... :D
