Why hello my fellow tuners... i was just wondering how high you can make a streatable CA18 rev... i'm thinking stock internals but a stand alone ecu or someting along those lines... since the CA has an oversquare (i think) engine and a really good vaulve train that it might be able to rev pretty high if you put the right cams and vaulve springs in... just a simple yet complicated question...

It's oversquare by like .6mm. And normally you want a shorter stroke to rev higher...that's why sportbikes have bores of 80+mm and strokes of 60+mm.

But yes, you'll need nice cams to use the revs and things like valve springs/retainers/etc.

The CA valvletrain is great, it will handle around 8000 in OE trim. Throw some beefy springs, light retainers and solid cam followers and you can go higher without worry. The oil delivery to your bottom end is the big worry. CAs stress the #1 rod first. When they develop a knock it's always #1 and when I yanked my engine apart which was routinely cranked to 8500 or more everything was good except the #1 rod bearing. Like any engine it's general condition is a big factor in it's revability.

ow you think you could solve the oiling problem at high rpms on the #1 rod/crank journal?

new oil pump, modified oil pump? oil pump swap from other engine? condem the oil squirters to increase oil pressure in the rest of the system? any solutions?

Yea, 8000 - 8500 are good numbers since the CA at low boost starts dropping off power at around 7000 rpm. This is with 270 cams and valve springs and a big turbo.

I think the problem is age. A new pump on a rebuilt engine should be fine. I beat the living snot out of a engine and the CA just keeps coming and all the rod-throwers are poorly maintained motors. The CA is a brick.

Does th CA have oil squirters... and are there certian turbos that you would have to get to suport a higher reving engine... or would a super T28 work...

yes it has squirties. Any turbo, properly sized will work. Your turbo supplier should be able work with you to pick the best one for your application.

Is the power drop off due to cams, or head flow capabilities? Has anyone flow tested these heads to see what they'll handle? You can only put so much air through a certain size hole.
